Large amount of snow has accumulated at the Seymour Salmon Hatchery (Photo: Matt Casselman). |
The snow just won't go away at the Seymour Salmon Hatchery! It has been buried for what must be a month now. All the snow and cold weather means the river has not seen much water. However, yesterday was the first day in a long time when we actually received some rain and as a result, a bit of snow melt.
The fish feeding continues at the hatchery. Staffs and volunteers are radio-tracking 16 summer-run steelhead and 3 winter-run steelhead up and down the river. All pink and chum salmon eggs have hatched and are incubating. The coho eggs are coming along nicely as well. The hatchery has enough summer-run steelhead broodstock and staffs are just waiting on them to be ready to spawn.
As for volunteering, the options right now are shovelling snow, and shovelling snow! Once the snow clears there will be work to do again.
