It is less than a week before anglers of all ages will converge on Cultus Lake near Chillliwack in search of the largest northern pikeminnow that is lurking in its depths. This year, the name of the derby has been changed to the Greg Clark Memorial Family Fishing Derby, in memory of Greg Clark who was a Fraser Valley Salmon Society director for many years and had been involved in organizing the derby the last few years. Last year, Greg was the derby chairman. Greg passed away suddenly a few months ago. Greg’s family is awarding a perpetual trophy in his memory to the youth, under 16, that catches the heaviest pikeminnow. There also will be major prizes given out for the second and third heaviest pikeminnow.

Another category for the young angler is 3 prizes, first through third for the fisher who brings the heaviest total weight to the weighing scales.

The final prizes that give a chance for every young angler to win is the hidden weight. Two bikes, both valued at over $200, will be awarded to one girl and one boy. A $50 gift certificate will also go along with each bike being presented.

For the adult anglers, the prizes that will go out include the heaviest fish and the total weight. In the youth division, there are also 3 prizes being handed out in each division. A complete prize list can be found at the end of this article.

The derby starts at day break on Saturday June 14th for the early risers and weigh-in ends at 2pm with the prize presentation starting at 2:30pm. Derby tickets can be bought from 6:30 am to noon at derby headquarters on Cultus Lake's Main Beach or before hand at Chilliwack Dart and Tackle and Fred’s Custom Tackle. They are $2 for those who are 15 and under, and $5 for adults. After all the main prizes are given out, draws will be held for some great runner-up prizes that have a value of up $50 dollars. You must be there to claim the draw prizes or leave the ticket with someone.

Dean Werk of Great River Fishing Adventure will have a number of boats there with guides to take out families without boats. Each trip will be around an hour long, which will start around 9am.

The FVSS will also have volunteers on some of the docks helping out the younger anglers tying up gear and supplying some bait. They will have a few rods to lend out as well but it is recommended to bring your own equipment if you have it.

There will be some games to play between landing that big pikeminnow, a concession stand that includes a cotton candy machine, several displays to view. Conservation officers from the Province and Staff of Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff will also be available on site.

This derby is part of The BC's Family Fishing Weekend and no freshwater fishing licenses are required by anyone to take part. Let’s hope the weather is good as this is a perfect way to get your family together for a great time and do not forget Sunday is Fathers Day. We also will remember Greg in our hearts that day as we put this event on in his memory and in support of his family.
