Como Watershed Group Festival
Posted on August 28th, 2008 by Rodney Hsu, webmaster

The Como Watershed Festival will take place Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Como Lake in Coquitlam from 1pm to 4 pm.  This date was chosen as it coincides with International Rivers Day and thus is part of a worldwide initiative to bring awareness to the management and sustainability of our waterways. This year’s festival will look somewhat different from our previous festivals in that it will focus specifically and rather exclusively on the Como Watershed. Our objectives for this year’s festival are to educate the public about the Como Watershed; to provide fun activities to reinforce this information; to recruit new members and volunteers to assist in the year-round initiatives coordinated by the CWG; and to celebrate the hard work and successes of the CWG. We hope to achieve these goals by providing six Stations located around the lake trail with each Station representing a different creek within the watershed. Each Station will have specific information regarding its representative creek as well as displays and activities relating to different components of sustaining, rehabilitating, and enhancing an urban watershed. All stations will be run by volunteers. The festival will be a self paced event with people going from station to station at their leisure. There will be no events that are time specific.

Our annual festival is fast approaching and we are still in need of members to help out with some of the displays. No experience is required. Just a love of nature and especially the Como Watershed.

Positions available:

  • Manning displays: 1. Wildlife, 2. Salmon and other fish - This will require 3.5 hours of your time on Sun, September 28. You will oversee the display and answer any questions the public may have. This doesn't mean you have to be an expert. Just basic knowledge, that you will be able to recite from the displays, is all that is needed. When all else fails, "I don't know", is a valid response, (I'm good at this one), as is, "Let me refer you to...", (here is where you insert Pam's name. Or whoever's name comes to mind. I am espescially good at this response. note: Inserting someone's name who is not present at the festival is discouraged. eg "Attila's the man to see" or "Go see Moonflower at station 2". Bad idea.)
  • Making Displays: 1. Water Quality and Toxins, 2. Wildlife, 3. Salmon and other fish  - The amount of time this will take will vary. It can be done with help from others, (I can help arrange this), or you can tackle it on your own or as a family. All supplies will be provided. Again, expertise is not required. The information exists, its just a matter of putting it all together. ("You know you wanna.")
  • Making signs: Artistic talent is not needed. Sometimes the more rustic signs look, the more charming they are. (Elementary School art ability is fine). Again, all supplies will be provided. (Here is a chance to bring out those stick-man drawings skills you have been dying to use.)

Note: If you are an expert at any of the above things, don't let us amateurs intimidate you. Your help will be just as valuable.

The important thing is that help is needed. Please consider lending a hand.
