Enjoyed a day off work today and spent it at the Vedder. Arrived at 1030 this morning and scouted about since it was my first time there. River looked good, colour was nice, but didn't seem all that high. Checked out my favourite spot last year upstream and a couple of anglers were already in the pool so I didnt bother fishing. Further upstream at the mouth of Sweltzer Creek, it looked like either a small squatting community was established, or perhaps just some people camping for a while.
I started fishing at Peach Road just to have a look around. Fished a nice looking pool but no takes. One fish did splash about so there were some. I moved further downstream and then something small and silvery inhaled my roe offering but shook the hook shortly after. I returned to the car and moved down to Lickman and noticed the gravel work proceeding along. I trust that the excavator is using a vegetable based oil in its hydraulics and the cloudy water did appear to be well contained by the gravel berm which separates it from the main flow. I guess a concern is if the water suddenly rises and fills the hole but if the river blows out, its going to be dirty anyway :)

The pools around Lickman looked good as always and it would be where I would recommend you to go. I saw numerous chum salmon showing and there were two springs caught - one probably about 10 and a bigger doe most likely close to 20. Rumours of large schools of coho in the Sumas as well waiting for a little more rain ;). Thats about it though - it rained the whole time I was there but there did not appear to be an increase and visibility did not change at all. There are fish in, not in any massive numbers but like they say, a bad day's fishing is always better than a good day's work.
Just nice to be out and thanks for the rod fishforever.

Will the excavators be out by mid October?
-
well yah the river is a bit low now but if it keeps raining it should be good soon.
-
This guy was telling us when they do that he takes out his float tube and fly rod and nails coho :o, but this guy had alot of other stories, as well.
-
I wouldn't dismiss those reports - I bet coho would love these new "stillwaters" and slower side channels. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Nicole has fished these sorts of holding area with some success until deposition naturally filled them in again. I would certainly give it a whirl with a fly rod.
-
When do they finish dredging?
-
nice report GHC we should get together and head there sometime if our schedules Will allow
-
thanks for the report. We need more rain!!!!!!! ;D

I believe the window that they are supposed to be working in has ended now but due to the low water conditions they have been given an extension. ::)

Yep, fishing in those settling ponds with a fly is the bomb... Very very productive, but not really so much for spin casters or float fishers... Their gear and presentation is normally WAY to big and disruptive... So it's best for those guys and gals to stick to the regular runs they're more suited to.
Fish with either a floating line and 10-13 feet of leader, or a clear sink line and 6-8 feet of leader. Use sparse flies, christmas trees, olive or black crystal buggers, flash flies, and rollded muddlers in size 8.
I'll see you all out there! I have yet to see the Vedder since one day in July trout fishing with 18 kids :) I'm getting antsy...
Cheers,
Nicole

I've had great results spinner fishing these pools as well as float fishing them. Just have to know how to fish them.
What I don't like is what happened to me 2 years ago... I got there early and was waiting for enough light to fish. Just as I had made a couple casts, 2 guys with fly rods came up to me and proceeded to tell me "get the @!#$ out of here, this is fly water". They threatened to kick my !@# if I didn't leave. Fortunately for them, my buddy (retired Navy Seal) had not shown up yet. At that time I wish he was there, instead, I walked away and fished downstream for a while. These guys eventually left then I moved back in.
-
haha some of those fly only guys are all purists and ethical people aren't they? ::)
-
I am surprised they would have been so aggressive, there is no fly only water on the vedder other than June or July I beleive. I have been involved in some heated talk when someone tries to beek there way into my zone, but never anything like that. Maybe a good thing for me, not so sure I would be smart enough to walk away.

I hate it when that happens. >:( I'm liable to tie on the biggest spoon I have in my arsenal and flog the run and make as much noise as I can.

Just put on a Maple Leaf Hat and they will leave. ;D ;D

Can I come fishing with you some day Chris ? With that hat, we should enjoy some solitude. ;D

I believe the Vedder is fly fishing only from May 1 - 31 below the Vedder Crossing bridge. Above the crossing, it's closed at this time. The entire system then closes from June 1 - 30, and reopens July 1. The water gets high and ugly then anyway due to the snow melt - doesn't it?
However, if bentrod was fishing in the Fall - those "fly guys" have absolutely no right to behave like idiots. I'm sorry to hear of your negative experience bentrod...
-
what a couple idiots... Sorry to hear that... We're not all like that, some of us are real nice like :D
Cheers,
Nicole

Thanks, and yes it was in the fall. It definitely got me fuming, but it's not worth it to confront them. You never know what idiots like those will do. I go out to have a good time, take it all in, maybe catch a few fish and make a friend or two. If karma has anything to do with it, it will come back around to those 2.

This would only happen when guys play around with feathers too often, it fluctuates their hornmones. ;)
That is an unfortunate experience bentrod! Thankfully I have never had a bad Vedder River experience. I think most users do respect others and recognize that we are all out there for the same reason. Rude people will emerge once awhile, but it is best just to dust them off your shoulders like what you did and move on. I think in the last few years this community has gotten tighter and worked very well together. Last steelhead season was a good example. Chris is a major driving force behind this. ;) His daily journals and constant reminders of garbage problems make people aware of these. We end up fishing together, catching fish together (well, some ::) ), keeping the river clean together. :)

You're right about that rod....I just tied up a bunch of rolled muddlers... What are you doing saturday night ? :-*
-
And here I thought it was only BB's that were unpolite. Sorry to hear about your run in with the fly guys. I believe this situation to be extremely rare from any kind of fisherman.
-
I guess I am lucky !! I have never had anyone get in my face at the river
