Title: Anything up in Squamish yet?
Post by: aquaboy24 on October 12, 2006, 09:20:51 PM
So when I snagged for the uptenth time on this little branch next to a sweet little hole in the upper vedder on Sunday, and my last float was gently drifting away(YES, I was short floating), and some guy walks by and yells at me for bottom bouncing and takes my picture....I had to sit down and ask myself why I even bother with the Vedder. Fishing with a bunch of militants around is no fun. SO.....anyone know if there are chum in decent numbers up Squamish way yet? I never thought i would say this...but I like that crowd much better.

Vince

Good grief, that's a terrible experience. :(

The Squamish has chums now. Whether it is fishing well or not, that's another story. The water clarity is still fair. Visibility is only a foot or two at times, worse in the afternoon when the weather warms up. This does not mean they wouldn't bite of course, it just takes more drifts to entice one. We were there recently and I was able to connect with several. Not many, but enough to make it a very enjoyable outing on a warm sunny day.

Pink wool was what I was using most of the time. I also had the odd fish that grabbed my spoon.

Good luck Vince! :)

On a Squamish note, with all spills in last while, is the fish from Squamish/Mamquam OK to eat? Did any organization do a study to confirm any effect pollution had on this fish? I heard on radio that pollution from last spill will affect eagles in the area possibly.   ???

The NaOH spill in August 2005 has no effect on the fish that you are catching right now. The pH was back to normal within hours after the spill. The immediate effect was the killing of all the fish that come in contact with the chemical at that time, the long-term effect is the population change due to the absence of offsprings of those fish that were killed.

Wasn't there an oil spill as well, or I didn't understand a name of the river on radio?

The main concern of the oil spill back in August was the marshes in the estuaries and the birds that use them. There was minimal amount of oil on the actual main channel, from what I was told anyways. I doubt the adult salmon that are coming in right now are impacted by that spill. If you want to be very sure, you can also email tobe@shaw.ca at the Squamish Streamkeepers and she would have all the latest updates on these things. :)

Back to the caustic soda spill...does that means chum returns 6 years down the road will suck? Where eggs/alvi or smolts int he river when that crap came through...or did the chum remain unharmed? probably no more pinks though?

V

ps..yes Rod..it did suck!

The only species that were impacted are the ones that were in the river at the time during the spill. See photos:

Chinook salmon, some pink salmon, sculpins, resident trout and char, juvenile steelhead in different year classes.

Chum and coho salmon of that year are not impacted.

That's strange, you should be able to see all of them. Sinaran had the same problem too. I can't do much about it because it's just a gallery program that I installed. :( Maybe try using IE6.0, which is what I am running and it works fine.

Anyways, I'm posting these up for anyone who wants to see.

Thanks rod,  I hadn't seen a picture of one that looked quite like that before. Does anyone know how many different types of lamprey there are in B.C.?
