Title: Stave River, October 15th 2008
Post by: Geff_t on October 15, 2008, 06:01:18 PM
Well here is a quick report from the stave. Got there this morning after dropping my son off at school and picking up my brother to find that the area we wanted to fish was pretty quiet with fishermen which was perfect. I put on my new fly pattern for this year and a few casts later I got a nice hatchery doe weighting at just over 7lbs. I also got a coho jack which I released and a nice buck chum also released. This was my brothers first day with the fly and he lost a chum. Since he brought his drift gear as well I decided to take him to a spot that I know almost no one goes to. And when we got there I was right. There was no one there. I rigged him up with a purple and pink jig and he had a fish on every drift. They hammered them so hard he hardly had to set the hook. So once he was doing fine I put on my chum fly and I too was getting fish. All female too. So I ended up with my hatchery coho and 2 chrome female chums. He ended up with 2 chrome female chum as well. Here is a picture of the coho. Taken on my cell phone.

I wonder where the roe from those 5 fish will be put to use? Looks like you got a good supply right through steelhead season. Nice fish.

Coho is for me  ;D Sorry no pics of the chum. In fact of all the years of fishing I have never taken a picture of a chum. I guess I better change that.

You will want to when you see the Squamish Chum in person.  They are impressive.  That is if anything really show up up there this year.

Chuck and duck. The last thing you want is for it to hit you in the back of the head  ;D

I need to know something about chum.  If I were to catch a chum such as the one fish squirrel caught (the one with the picture two posts earlier), I would immediately release it thinking it was a boot not worth even thinking of keeping, not even for the smoker.  I've only retained chum that had some silver to them.  However, I increasingly see people keep what I think are "old boot chums".  When exactly is a chum worth keeping and not worth keeping?  thanks...

for me general rule "BUCKS" black belly fish be smelly
"DOES" need some stroking  ???
if after a few gental belly rubs she does not let go all over your feet  :o :o :o
then the eggs are still in skien form and i have found this kind of fish quite allright for smoking
plus its a nice double whammy  for the roe :D

Another thing a friend pointed out to me the other day,
SEA-LICE,if she has a bit of reflection to her, nice white belly,
and sea-lice on her, chances are she is somewhat fresh in the system
and would make a great smoker.

Thanks for the info guys, very helpful.  Just wondering though,  why do certain people go to the river every day and take home those black/purple/green black bellied boots?

I suspect many don't know any better but they soon will after their first bite.
