Well its coming up on that time of year again, I figured now would be a good time to get this started and see what kind of interest we have in another Steelhead Derby !! I had many suggestions last year and I am taking them all into account, the number one suggestion being, holding the derby at a later date so we have more fish in the system.
I had a look at the calender and I am thinking either Sat Feb 7th or Sun Feb 8th, did everyone like the idea of having hats with the entry ?? this is also a shout out to all the generous Tackle shops that made great donations last year... I hope I can count on all of you to help us out once again.... I also believe that the defence alliance was a great cause to donate the money to and would like to help them out again this year.... what do you think ??
Last year turned out to be a great success but I think we can do much better than that this year, maybe with the later date we can turn 6 fish into 15 fish :)
I am going to get in touch with all the tackle stores in the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley area to see if I can get them to sell the tickets in advance to make it easier on a lot of people who maybe had trouble getting to Reaction Fly & Tackle first thing in the morning...
Thats all I have for now, please get in touch with me or post on this thread if you have any suggestions that you think could make this years derby the best one ever
I don't have access to personal messages on here right now so please e-mail me at

Hey Rick, I've added a poll for you at the top so not everyone has to reply on which day is better for them.
For people who have just joined the forum or started reading this past summer, Rick has done a fantastic job on putting together these steelhead derby in the past two winters. It's an opportunity for all Chilliwack River anglers to meet, enjoy a day of fishing, learn and most importantly raise money for the sportfishing community.

Great to see you are willing to do the derby again this year Rick ,it is allways a great time.
I like the later derby date,i also need another hat and the defense alliance is a great choice for the donation,I'm looking forward to having a great time again this year.
-
Any chance we could do it one of the two following weekends?
-
Sign me up even though i didn't get one i had a great time, a world of knowledge from fellow anglers.Keep up the good work Rick. That would be a good thing if Reaction could sell the tickets also as it would probably draw more people to this derby.
-
I'll volunteer to run a fly only section of the derby so the fly guys can have a chance...slim maybe but you never know!!!
I vote Sat.
-
how many guys are gonna be throwing guts? how many guys coming out?

how many guys are gonna be throwing guts?
This thread should be used to decide the derby date, let's not stray from that and get it done first. Once that's decided, a new thread will be started for all the derby planning and chit chat.

I am going to add a couple of dates to the poll..... if I can figure out how :)
would be nice to see you out there !!!
Rick

Hey Rod could you please add the dates of Sat Feb 14th and Sun Feb 15th to the poll, and maybe wipe it clean so those who have already voted may vote again if the new dates are more suitible,
Thx Rickl

I like the 14th and 15th better as the 7th or 8th is the boat show weekend and I am working there all that week.
-
I'd prefer any Sunday but I'd take Saturday if that's the day.
-
Sounds great to me..... Let us know when the big date is set!! :)

Hey Rick, how about just Sunday February 8th and 15th, otherwise there are too many options and the votes would be really spread out. I've locked the poll for now. Let me know and I'll reset and edit it for you.
-
Saturday for sure
-
I say 3rd week of January. Not too many people on the river, and allows for a bunch of new fresh fish to come after a bunch were caught in the boxing day derby.
-
Hey Rick thanks for putting this on again, I've still got the hat from last year, and the rod and reel combo I won as well. The date does'nt affect me to much but I like the idea of having it mid-Feb. or the following weekend as there will be more steel in the river. Just let me know and I'll be there with friends. Thanks again Rick.

I really think we need to offer up all four days as an option, I know that the weekend matters to some but so does the day, lets make it a four day option and whichever day wins will be the new derby day ....
Thx Rick

Last year we had the derby later in January and there wern't that many fish in the system, I definately think that holding it in Febuary will make a big difference.... and all those people that will be on the river will hopefully be taking part of the derby ;)

Ok done, poll reset and unlocked, please re-vote. :)

Some of us have GF. The 14th is not a good day lol. Also if the boat show is the previous weekend I'll probably be working there too. 15th gets my vote.
-
15th gets my vote as well because I'm away the other weekend.
-
Hoping to make it out to this.
Thanks to all who make it happen.

Hey Rick,
I think I heard that the SDA has now folded and is now defunct. I may be wrong. I will be happy to accept all donations for the R.F.F.T. (Randog's fund for Tahiti)

The derby is opened to both genders and for non-fishing spouses, they can take care of the cooking. ;D Anyway, it looks like 15th is the preferred date by most.
I will be happy to accept all donations for the R.F.F.T. (Randog's fund for Tahiti)
Is that where we're doing next year's calendar shoot? :o
My personal feeling on the fund raised is that it would be more beneficial to a localized group than a large province-based group such as SDA and SSBC, not that they are unworthy causes. Localized projects for the Chilliwack River such as claybank stabilization, habitat enhancement, cleanup projects and educational programs are needed and they often lack funding. Anyway, we trust Rick would make a good decision as the derby organizer. People will sign up to support the cause if they believe in it and enjoy the derby, just like the last two years. :)
-
Where will tickets for the derby be sold?
-
eeesh the 15th is my Birthday (21 again) :D
not sure if i can swing it but i will try
-
Donating the money to use on the stabilizing of the claybanks on the chilliwack would be a great idea, what group is involved in this,i hear that it is quite a pricey job to get it done properly.

Donating the money to use on the stabilizing of the claybanks on the chilliwack would be a great idea, what group is involved in this,i hear that it is quite a pricey job to get it done properly.
The claybank stabilization has been handled by the Chilliwack River Action Committee (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/crac/) in the past and members of that committee has done a wonderful job on raising fund through public interest, private organizations and various government agencies to get the job done. Because of their effort since the mid 90's, anglers get to enjoy more fishing days on the Vedder. CRAC has not only been involved with claybank stabilization, it has also been involved with construction of additional spawning habitat in the Chilliwack River system as well as repairing riparian zones such as tree planting.
Unfortunately, since 2006 there has been a drastic drop of interests from anglers to support the effort. This was clearly shown at last year's Help Habitat Fundraiser where only a few showed up while the river was packed with anglers. Since then, many members have cut back on their work in these projects, which is understandable because they are mostly retired individuals and lack motivation to keep something going where there isn't a strong support. New committee members are needed to lead.
If anyone is interested, I recommend you to email David Lamson at dflamson@shaw.ca to find out the current status of the committee and what future projects have been planned. There certainly isn't a shortage of work to do as many already are aware of the unstable slides in the upper river. Supporting a group such as this with donation isn't just funding it financially, it shows that there is a strong public interest and urges the government to be involved as well. Anyway, as much as I want all the money goes to this group, my recommendation to Rick (if he is interested in looking into it) is to talk to Dave first and find out what is going on with CRAC first.
-
Another idea would be to donate the proceeds to the steelhead society of BC...
Or alternately the BCFDF.
Maybe these two groups would be willing to help.
Cheers,
Nicole
-
the wknd of 14th and 15th is good for me. either day. will be out there for sure!
-
I am in for the 15th but if I was Rick I would think twice about donating to CRAC. I know that 2 years ago the money was donated to them and last year where they not the ones that refused our money because they felt it was not enough to make it worth their time to come out. Last years funds went to the SDA and they where more then happy to accept it. I think we stick with an organization that appreciates what we are trying to do. But I also agree with looking into the BCFDF and although the steelhead society sounds good I am still a little skeptical because of their past practices.
-
February 15th for me .......
It would be nice to head out Steelheading on my birthday.

So it looks as though Feb 15th will be the day this year, thanx for taking the time to cast your vote....
This money comes from all of us, and allthough I already have my idea of where the monies should go I want this to be a decision made by all of us as a group, therefore I will start a poll and we can all vote on where we feel the money should go this year, the organization with the most votes wins, simple as that !!
cheers Rick

Now that the date is decided, I'll lock this thread and poll up. As Rick said, please go to http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=19315.0 and vote for the organization that you wish to donate the fund to. Once that second step is done, we'll have a new thread started around early December with derby and prize info. :)
