Hi guys
I have a 9" 6wt fly rod which is old enough to fix some part , so I' m thinking that it could be a UL centerpin rod for trout or small
coho,but i'm still confused which is better. Anybody have a good idea?

I have an old 9wt that is now a cp rod. As long as the rod has normal eyes all the way up it is fine. I will be using it on the smaller flows for steelhead and coho.

Hey Kim,
I have an old fiberglass Berkley cherrywood 9ft. fly rod that I had fashioned into a centerpin rod and love it. Coupled it with an old Trudex reel and use it on the Capilano and Coquitlam for Coho. Love the slow action of the fiberglass.

The guides are the key, fly rod snake guides, are not meant to have mono run throught them and will wear the guides.
But you could always try and replace the guides later..

i recently tied an 8wt 10'8 rainshadow switch blank into a centerpin rod, its a 4 piece so it can be stored in my backpack.

The problem with using a fly rod as a centrepin is that a fly rod has more flex throughout the length of the rod. Setting the hook with a float, weight and standard float fishing presentation will be difficult with a fly rod blank.
I've seen Randog do it and he really has to put his back into it. LOL

I would imagine that rod action would be a considerable factor if converting a fly rod in to something else.
IE: slow action may need more pull to set the hook proper. fast action would require some what less ( I would think? ) among other pros/cons

A buddy of mine used a 9ft. 8 weight fly rod with a seldex on it for years fishing steelhead worked good for him, I saw him beach 4 or 5 fish on it over the years and being a fairly tall long armed guy seemed to have no problem setting the hook with it.

Now I finished upper part and waiting cork grip and reel seat for lower part and I checked action few times, I think It will be a funny noodle rod for small fish. thanks kim

Sorry for reviving an ancient thread but I understand monofilament not so good on snake guides - but what about power pro braid? Wouldn't it be softer then mono and not damage the guides. I have a fly rod I never use but was hoping to double duty it with a small centrepin.

Snake guides as runners are fine on a light cp rod, as long as it's relatively light duty. Make sure you have 2 quality strippers and tip top. I fished this way, with mono line, for years with no issues.

braid will chew through snake guides pretty easily.
