I would like to ask everyone on how would you as a sport fisherman/woman set an example for the rest of the people?
Okay, I'll get started:
Last time I was out in an area that was obviously heavily used by fishermen, I took about 15min of my fishing time when I was kind of tired of fishing and needed a break, and looked around on the ground and picked up any pieces of long fishing lines that were laying around. I just packed them in my fishing bag and when I was back at home I simply tossed them in the trash can. I wanted to leave a clean spot when I left. I wanted the next fisherman to enjoy that spot and I also wanted to show others around me that it's not that tough to clean up even if it's not your own trash!
I'll add more when comes to my mind.
Now, your turn: :)

When my kids (10+ years) are with me, I get them to pick up some of the garbage left by others. I'm lazy and I figure it's a good lesson for the kids.

I clean up too, but I wish other would not leave garbage behind, it would be so much nicer

When I teach young people (And others) in my FlyFishing Classes, A big part of it is respect for nature and on the water ethics. I also Help out wherever I can in the industry. I have done many cleanups, Tree plantings, and help out with the free fishing weekends.

I release fish properly & don't keep boots. I also can be quite outspoken on the river when I see atrocities. I've been lucky not to be stabbed yet ;)
-
Catch and release...short float...
-
I no longer buy atlantic salmon at the supermarket, as likely it is from a farm in the straight. And if i see anyone else doing so i will explain why not to.
Also cleaning up your spot even if it is someone elses junk is one all should practice, we would have such nice looking rivers then.
-
Rather than throw my empties into the river, I leave them neatly stacked on the shore so funpig's kids can find them easily.
-
Avoid bouncing betties and 20 foot ridiculeaders to purposely snag fish.
-
Take a group of 8 - 11 year olds to camp twice a year and teach them to fish and properly handle and release all of the trout they catch. For many of them, it is their first time fishing or at least catching something.
-
I avoid wearing anything by DKNY, FUBU or any other 4 letter acronym and I talk like borat to tourists.
-
Wear Simms out fit, sage hat, Bauer fly reel and winston bamboo fly rod, who care you can not cast.
-
Don't buy farmed Salmon. Treat the entire resource with respect. From the fish you catch to the environment which you are fishin in. Release the fish gently and don't leave your prized catch to rott in the hot sunshine like I have seen many do.
Have a great day

Yeah full simms knee high warm up socks, sage hat with 4 feathers in it, and a real live parakeet on my shoulder too. If you're not wearing the same you have no right to be fishing. And if you can't pick up on sarcasm....

Don't buy farmed salmon and explain to others why it is so bad, help others release fish that they are not allowed to retain to help minimize the impact on the fish and also help net a keeper, respect others space.

Just kidding, I know I get some respond.

Respect thy neighboor,, Use inside voices,, If you want to get hammered go to the bar,, share your pot,, help where possible, and leave those alone that look like they are eating sour grapes,, Oh and I will admit,, never ever buy sockeye from fn on the side of the road or salmon sashimi thats not advertised as wild,, I was guilty of these last two up untill about two years ago,, I am a neewbie and am learning along my way,,,, This site has been incredibly helpful and even get a few laughs here and there,,,, YOU GUYS ARE GREAT

I clean myself up before fishing. I have a natural white spring odour otherwise. :-X

Share a Fly pattern when yours is working and others are having zero results with their flies. Share a lure if others are not catching with theirs. Many times other anglers have shared their pattern / lure type with me when I was down and out. Then their recommendation would work for me and it made a big difference. It was Vic at STS who helped me in the early years on the River, Kelly Davison who taught me about Flies, Steve Jennings who taught me about Chironomids at Leighton, Earl Anderson who fixed my fly gear. Etc, Now it is our turn to help others .

I don't really know about setting an example because I have only had two seasons of Salmon fishing - still learning.
I just think its good to not assume one knows it all. Always be friendly to those around you especially when they are stepping on your toes or tangling up your line 'cause thats just the natural consequence with lots of people crowded together. Try to avoid doing anything unethical like snagging, leaving litter etc. Always be willing to learn from others. Be willing to help if someone asks for it.
I think tolerance and good humor counts for a lot.

I even go as far as helping people set up their gear properly, even sharing roe ( if i have enough to), I am notorious for giving away flies on the river or lake to people so they can get into some or more fish. I cant stand it when other fisherman seem to think they have the secret and wont share ::)
I was on a lake a couple years ago and i asked a guy what was working when i first arrived on the water ( i asked cause he was catching some) and he just ignored me completely >:( Well i was anchored in a different area but close enough for him to see me and i started hammering on fish, I mean i couldnt really do anything wrong as long as i had that right fly. Well guess who came over to ask me what i was using, Yup you guessed it that same guy. Well i divulged what i was using however i didnt tell him the size which was the huge thing. I proceeded to watch him for awhile and he got nothing while i was still on fish. long story short when i was going in for dinner (basically at dark) I decided to go by and tell him the size of the fly and also educated him that he would have gotten that info earlier if he hadnt been such a dink in the first place. I think i even gave him a fly. I think he was very humbled by the whole experience ;)
dont go fishing to be greedy and be the only one into fish, remember to share with people (if they ask) because it will give you the warm fuzzy feeling inside LOL its easier to be nice then to be a dick.

Generally, I picked up all the fishing line at where I fish and disposed them later. Just to be common sense, you do this for your safety and environment. Last week, I took my kids out at #6 and I found someone, who did not put out the fire so I asked my kid to water it while I fished ;D ;D. and then I praised him as a hero who had just saved the forest fire...etc ;D ;D ;D.
Or better yet, if you lose your lucky lurer, you will come back the next day when it is low tides and recovered it. Sometimes, I have a reward while I am looking for it ;D ;D ;D ;D
Am I good example sport fisherman??/ ;D ;D ;D

Attend as many cleanups as I possibly can. I have also organized a few cleanups on the Alouette River. Helped at a couple hatcheries. Also as everyone should, taken garbage out while fishing.
If you dont go out of your way to make a difference you have no reason to complain about things. Do your part and MORE!!!

Hey!
Where and How do you do that... I've got a group of 8-11 yr olds and a group of 11-14 yrs olds that I'd like to do the same with.
PM if you wish or email Brian . Hampson AT gmail . com
Thanks.
