Title: Chilliwack River, September 23rd 2010
Post by: chris gadsden on September 23, 2010, 11:05:10 AM
After the action we had yesterday I reached the river at first light with great anticipation but my day got off to a slow start as while cutting a piece of bait off the skein of chum roe I also cut my leader in half.  ::) After the tie up all the bites I got was from smolts.

I was trying a new spot from yesterday but moved up to it after but no one home. Not as much surface movement today, water conditions good. I think I will try the Friday Hole later today, at last light.

I went down river to The Bell run and had a nice talk with The Carp before I came home to do a radio interview on 89.5 The Hawk about Sunday's River cleanup. I hope some of you will be able to attend. I must bring some nice floats to give away at Rodney's display.

Most of the people out were flossing and long lining and saw them foul hooking as well as landing a fair number of chinooks. :o

One person from across the line ( American visitor) had 3 split shots on with a wool tie and was yanking constantly.  ??? He was snagging in a gravel excavation site. When I told him that was not allowed he said he did not know that and would stop.

I know why I had a bad day, I was not wearing my Maple leaf pullover, I am sure Rodney is fishing in it today.;D

I was out for first light as well. Had a nice little run all to myself and beached a nice 15lb chinook with a half dozen others long line released. No coho seen but there sure were alot of adult chinook and jacks jumping about.

Did I say craft? Mobile. Everyone knows you never venture off above the crossing, just need to pin point the guy in blue.

I have heard from very reliable sources that the Leaf Immobile will be tagged by Canuck fans this steelhead season.  ;D

Slipped out to the "Hot Spot" just before dark so I could not be seen by Big Fisher. ;D

Although lots of fish showing all I could do was have smolts steal my bait. I saw a chap that was throwing a spoon pack out a nice coho.

Just as darkness was blanking the river i decided to call it a day and started back to the Leaf Mobile. On the way out I spotted a nice looking run,"what the heck might as well try a cast" I said to myself and the rod had not been folded up.

On the first cast the pesky smolts were pecking at the bait not pulling the Maple Leaf DNE float fully down. A few cast later the float does go down, I pull thinking maybe it is a larger smolt but no a coho jack is quickly airborne.

After a brief battle it sees the chunky jack coming unwilling to the shoreline, I peer down in the near darkness and see the adipose is there so the first coho jack of the season gains its freedom.

It is nearing the end of the allowable fishing time maybe 25 minutes to go and after a few more casts in the Thursday Pool I am sneaking away from the river to battle through the bush through my secret trail.. ;D

Tomorrow as it is Friday I thought I would attend the Friday Hole but maybe I will fish the Thursday Pool on a Friday.

The rain has been on an off tonight but I think the river will remain prime for tomorrow unless it really pours buckets.

I am so glad you agreed to take me out fishing to show me all the secret spots Mr Gadsden. Don't say you don't remember saying this, either, it wont work on me!

Another great report, Chris, thanks for the report!  Will be keeping my eyes open for the Leaf Mobile tomorrow, keep yours open for my silver Forester!  Hopefully bump into you early AM.
