Title: looking for a new ultralight spinning rod ... any suggestions?
Post by: noobfisher on November 23, 2010, 08:30:09 PM
With X'mas around the corner ... looking at getting a new ultralight spinning rod.  been hitting the local stocked lakes for rainbow this year and looking to replace the rod I've been using :)

I saw Berkley has a 6 foot ultralight rod specifically designed for trout ... wondering if anyone has or used this rod?  Any other rod's you'd reccommend?  looking to spend between $50 to $100, thanks!

Bargain at $49.99 + tax.  Great little rod - I have the 9ft stonger version - very gentle tip to allow fish to turn then enough lower backbone to set the hook.

Have fun Santa!  ;)

I have two light spinning rods I have used in stocked lakes. Neither are very expensive and are really fun to fish. One is a Shimano Stimula (2-6 test), the other is an amundson savvy rod (4-8 test). Both rods cost around $30 when I picked them up a couple years ago. I find that I use the amundson more often and have even managed to catch some small springs on it when fishing for rockfish in the ocean. They are both very sensitive and great for local trout fishing, but I can't seem to find anyone online that still carries the configurations I have.

Mines a little heavy for this fishery i presume, but i got it for christmas last year, and dont wanna upgrade it till im older, as i have been really focusing on fly fishing.  Its a Abu Rod+Reel Combo that im positive my parents got from canadian tire, and i really like it for this fishery, as well as others like Kokanee, small river Cutthroats , Pikeminnows etc.

I have quite a few spinning rods from ultralight to medium, which I use quite frequently. Some I prefer more than others after trying them out for a few years. My favourite ultralight spinning rod right now is Daiwa's Spinmatic SMC 662ULFS (rated 2 to 6lb test). I usually use it in lakes for rainbow trout, Tidal Fraser River for cutthroat, bull trout, pikeminnow and peamouth chub. I've also used it at St Mary Lake for smallmouth bass. Last month I hooked a coho salmon while targeting bull trout with it, managed to land it as well.

Here are some video footages of this rod in action.

--this is coming from Santa right?
--so at no costs except being good...  try a Phenix ultra-light Iron feather or a Kistler Helium- LTX
--might want to get a Stella SW reel to match

I bought 4 of the Shimano (Sedonoa) combos that are available at costco at certain times throughout the year.  $50 for the combo!  Gotta love Costco's buying power.

I use them for bass, trout and pinks mostly.

I like to have them all rigged and ready, keeps my casts, hooksets and feels consistent by using the same setup.

what is the general thought to the rod length? I see the rod length varies from 6 to 8 feet ... is it more personal preferance.

With all this snow it's time to think about new gear :)

For me, it depends on what type of fishing you intend to do. If I am spincasting lures in rivers or spots that are quite tight, then a shorter rod around 6' is preferred. If I am float fishing, then I prefer a rod that is up to 8' or 9' long so I can keep more line off the surface.

I also use a long rod for spincasting on beaches where long casts are required.

+1 for Fenwick. I have an HMXS 60L-2 MF and am very happy with action, weight and overall build quality.

That reel is out of your price range that you are looking for. ;D

It is a Shimano Twinpower (not available in North America unless purchased from Europe and Asia via Ebay etc).

http://fish.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/nl/index/Products_2011/reels/rear_drag/twin_power_ci4_ra.html

I've had it since 2001, had it serviced last year and still works great.

Hi. I was wondering where did you order this or which store can I buy this rod at? I have been to army and navy and also wholesales sports and they don't carry it. I also checked out the daiwa online store. Thanks.
