Title: 2010/11 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates
Post by: Rodney on December 01, 2010, 06:19:47 PM

Between early December and late April, the Chilliwack River offers a productive winter steelhead fishery for both local and visiting anglers around the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. While other nearby systems also provide such a fishery, the Chilliwack River yields more success due to the amount of fish being produced by the Chilliwack River Hatchery. This thread has several objectives:

Fishing regulations

Regulations for the steelhead fishery differ slightly to the fall salmon fisheries in BC, so please familiarize by going through the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations) from time to time if unsure. For the Chilliwack River, anglers should be aware of these regulations. Please report violators by phoning 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).

Fish species and identifications

While the primary target species is steelhead in this fishery, several other species may also be encountered. It is important to know the morphological differences between these species so you do not accidentally retain a fish that is not opened for retention.

Steelhead's life history is similar to pacific salmon's. It is a variation of rainbow trout, which has an ocean phase. Unlike pacific salmon, steelhead may not die after spawning. Size range of steelhead from the Chilliwack River ranges between 6lb and 15lb, while bigger fish have often been recorded every season.

Several identification keys can be used to recognize a steelhead. Its white gum and tongue, lack of teeth behind the tongue. Once arrived from the ocean, its body is silver with heavily spotted back. Its tail is spotted from top to bottom and it is not forked. During spawning phase, pink and red colourations become apparent on the gill plates and across the body. Below are additional photos that may assist you.

Resident rainbow trout can also be caught while targeting steelhead. Unlike steelhead, they are typically under 18 inches in length or 2lb in weight. All wild rainbow trout must be released.

Bull trout are often encountered while targeting steelhead and they are required to be released. Their size ranges between 1lb and 10lb. Bull trout can easily be identified by its white and pink spots across the body. Their mouth is large and extends way behind the eyes. The end of their pelvic fins is often white. All bull trout must be released.

Coastal cutthroat trout travel in schools. Several identification keys can be used to differentiate them from rainbow trout. Their body and tail are heavily spotted from top to bottom. An orange slack can be found on the bottom side of the gill plate. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches. Only hatchery cutthroat trout can be kept. All wild cutthroat trout must be released.

Mountain whitefish belong in the salmonid family. While their body is similar to a minnow, one can easily identify them by locating the adipose fin. Their mouth is small and protudes slightly. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches.

General etiquettes

When fishing for steelhead in a stream, it is considered rude to start just downstream from another angler who is already fishing. When approaching a run, always start from the head of it and work your way down so other anglers can have a chance to try it too. If other anglers are already fishing at a spot where you want to fish, then you should either move to a different spot or talk to them first. More likely than not, other anglers do not mind having you joining them.

Original post has been fixed. The video series are actually only available to our subscribers (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/tour/index.html). Having an account with a post count 50 or more actually only gives you access to the fishing reports section, not other subscription features.

A section on general etiquettes has also been included. It's actually already available in the article on the main section of the website: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/2010/1210_01.html so I just C&Ped it to here.

Question about water clarity when water is crystal clear should you go bright or dark color for the float? same goes for the presentation? or does it make a difference. Also can the fish see the weights and get spooked ?
Title: Re: 2010/11 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates
Post by: BigFisher on December 05, 2010, 03:56:06 PM
Yes fish can see weights and yes fish can see floats. I prefer to match up my float with the colour of the sky, or surroundings, but a darker colour always seems to be enough. As for weights, small split shots are less visible and blend in with all the other gravel and debris rolling down river.

Water was great today, very low and clear, I would prefer a bit of colour.

I have a question about the regulation. I know it says all wild rainbow, bull, and cutthroat trout have to be released in the river. I was wondering if there are hatchery rainbows, bull, and cutthroat for retention? Or is it just retention of hatchery steelhead?

Scroll down to the Chilliwack River section and you'll find the answer to hatchery marked trout retention:

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/docs/1011/fish-synopsis_2010-11_region2.pdf

There are no hatchery marked bull trout in Lower Fraser and tributaries.

They can definately see the weight and float. I have had many fish try and eat the weight it as well as the brightly coloured top of my float !! Those ones were not spooked just hungry.......lol

Water fine today but could change if the rain they predicated makes it this far inland. None today in Chilliwack but it is mild. A warm wind from the south can change things quickly as there is lots of snow in the hills. This is an scenario for another highwater event for the Chilliwack Vedder River that usually happens from now and into January.

Was out on the vedder today.. rained for the first 45 mins or so of this morning..Weather held up until 3 is when i left.  Lower is quite murkey... Managed to get on a Wild coho, Second fish was lost after a few headshakes(not sure what it was), third fish i saw a flash of white and thought for sure im on a steelie.  Turned out to be a chromed chum that was just starting to get bars ever soooo slightly. And as much as i would of liked to, i did not bonk it.. lmao  jk ;)

Yes there is a late run of chum that come in the system. One January a few years ago I caught two that were so bright I thought they were steelhead when I first saw the flash.

Visibility about 2 feet in the Vedder near dark. Snow level down on the hills again so it has cooled off some today. Should be better tomorrow if it keeps cool and no more heavy rain.

which sections of the river would be best to fish tomorrow? Not looking for any specific spots just a general direction. I really need to land my first steelhead. Last weekend I fought and landed a nice hatchery doe but when I bent over to grab her my mainline caught my jacket zipper and broke. I cried as the fish looked at me mockingly and swam away. Friday I fished all day long, had one bite, one hookup and my leader snapped 30 sec into the fight. So tonight I re-spooled, re-tied all my leaders with new line and I'm heading out tomorrow. Wish me luck  :-\

If you have hooked two fish this early in the season you obviously have chosen the right spots to fish. Took me three years to land my first so just keep plugging away ;)

Just looked at the river and the Lower has improved to close to 2 feet now, no rain at the present time.

Talked to an angler by the Hydro Bridge and said the Upper is fine at this time.

I headed out today mid afternoon. I was going to enter the derby but family obligations kept me from the river.  decided to hit the river anyhow. seemed like fish numbers have been high. Myself and fishing partner fished hard all day and did not see a fish caught. TONs of guys out (being derby day) however it was pretty sleepy in the mid river where we were fishing. I think the number of early season anglers have created an inflated consensus of the early run size.  Could just be bad luck though.

ps Howe is a  beak (lets go this week)

Was out yesterday for the first time this season . Lower river looked pretty good . Had two on , one for a good ten minutes but could not land it due to no beach . It was hooked at the top end of an embankment , went down stream , followed as far as I could , then all I could do was hold on and hope to get it back upstream to where I was standing . But no luck on that , hook finally bent open .
Saw one other pulled out .
Water was still a bit high but clarity was good .
Cold snap for the next few days should drop it to a nice level .

Fished about 5times on the chilliwack in last month and I havent even gots 1 bite lol?
I know you guys put in your time and get fish, but its kinda hard to believe some of these guys say 2nd trip.... 2nd fish,or 5th time out 5th fish landed lol, how they do that?
Thanks to this site for all the info you guys provide on conditions, fish caught, general etiquettes on the river I learned lots of good stuff from here.
Good luck to all, tight lines everyone.

I hooked 3 fish/landed 1 on my first trip and haven't touched anything now in 3 trips, might not hook another for a while.  That's how this game is played and I wouldn't have it any other way ;D.  It's masochistic in a way... Every lost fish is replayed in my mind about 1000 times; my work suffers because of it.  I probably speak for everyone here when I say that people who don't fish, and even some that do, just don't understand.  They'll think you're crazy for working so hard at something that apparently gives so little back... but we all know better.

You should be skeptical when people say 5th trip 5th fish... there always seem to be lots of fish hooked, especially when no one is looking ;)   With some people it may be legit when they say hooked four landed two today, though with most a "hooked" usually means bottom, and landed usually means hooked for 10 seconds before it shook the hook, and caught means they fought it long enough to see it was a fish before they lost it.  ;)

Well I went 3 trips 3 fish (with pictures of each) and now I've gone two trips with nothing. Sometimes it's luck, sometimes it's skill.

gonna take at least a day or 2 until that water is clear enough for fish to see anything.

From just above the Crossing and then down, dress warmly as it will be very chilly first thing as well the NE wind will be blowing in the Lower. I am going to start much later when everyone is frozen and gone home. ;D ;D

Hope you get one on your outing, you will enjoy the pin I am sure.
It was really nasty with that wind yesterday, but there still seemed to be no lack of people out on the river. You'd almost think there were still coho in for the amount of guys out. ;)

River has come down and the water a nice green colour. It was freezing cold today. Had my eyelets filling with ice and had my reel freeze up. I didn't see anyone else on the river until after 9am and even so very few anglers. It's slippery out there so be careful, I'll post a photo of the river from the crossing when I get a chance

Should be OK if it does not rain although heavy rain warning in the forcast. It feels like Spring out there now as quite mild with most of the snow now gone. I also noticed my wife's daffodils starting to emerge.

Will give another update later on if I get out for another look, may take the rod too. ;D ;D

checked out the upper last night and the river was 3.5 maybe 4 up top and 2.5-3 feet above the anderson and tolmie slides. went out this morn and the river was up at least a foot at the crossing...not a good sign. drove up top to find it was completely blown and way up. drove back down to lickman just to see how high the lower was from when i checked a few days ago and it was full of debris with 10-15  foot logs and roots floating down.... whole new river on its way ;D

I went down to peach to take a look...was a couple guys fishing...but it's still very colored..basically no vis...Some nice looking runs in that area...would have been great if it was clean.

Not to put a damper on your weekend fishing, I might be looking at some other options this weekend.  I had the whole week off and didn't get out once.  I see the river has come up again.  Might take a few days still to clear.  More rain forcast for Monday.  When will it end.

I hope you know that if you retain a steelhead on the Vedder you must stop fishing.

Regional daily quota is 2 (hatchery fish)...
Vedder limit is 1, other rivers also have a 1 fish limit. As long as you can prove your fish is from a diff system you can keep fishing a separate one.

people keep asking this. the river is sh*t and will most likely be out into this coming week. Has anyone noticed that the graph is flat lining? even bumped up a little with the rain yesterday, it is not clearing up and is still very very fast. The visibility from Ranger run up yesterday was about 2'-3' but below that pretty chalky and terrible below Slesse.

The lower was ok this morning, but they have been working on the clay sides up in slesse and that really colored up the lower towards late afternoon...The upper is a green color (above allison) with maybe a foot of vis..I tried to take a pic to show the clarity so you people with the long drive can judge...but I think it's worth it, it's fast but there's some nice water.

If your really set on catching a steelhead , cement slab always is holding fish plus waters alot cleaner, just a busy run. The trick to being succsefull in the steelhead game is cover lots of water, and watch other guys to see where there getting fish because steelies will often sit there, and just watch to see if they miss any spots, and if it you want to fish it just fish something diffrent then what they were using, it may be chanllenging for a newbee but once u find a fish you will start to develop you own little route which u will know like the back of your hand and almost always get into some steel  ;D

good luck and tight lines been a good season so far

ya no problem
upper river (past borden creek) was in decent shape today, and cement slab was almost ideal. saw 7 fish landed and 2 of my own. Best bet would be during the week when its less busy because you can expermient with diffrent baits and such and explore the river more and cover lots of water fast. But I know how hard this can be for most of us with work, and school  >:( and btw today I found ghost shrimp to work prety well

know where to fish and i only fish jensen eggs, and colorado blades, and sometimes ghost shrimp(rarely tho) and short float so im not loosing many hooks or weights or spending much time changing what im using, and only about a 10gram foam float so I can detect the slightest bite

Lots of useful items for fishermen in that pic. I see a blue stripping basket for flyfishing at the bottom right, a few roe drying racks near the water, possibly a few roe rags too for gut chuckers.

Pathetic.

Someone should see if there is a receipt or house address or something amongst all of that...

If a person is going to commit a public crime you would think they aren't that stupid to leave an address on it but you never know.

It always is so disturbing to see this as well so many people continue to abuse out environment in so many ways. No wonder the world is going down hill and we humans are to blame for most of it.

No wonder the world is going down hill and we humans are to blame for most of it.

Always makes me remember Agent Smith in the movie Matrix:

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet."

I don't think Mother Nature is going to put up with us much longer. We are long overdue for a major 'adjustment'. Hopefully, it will start by removing those who dump garbage around and their next of kin.

I was up River Saturday checking out some of the cleaner water runs, and it looks like the start of this clay mess is coming from the old ranger area where about a third of the flow is back against the clay bank again..I bumped into Chris further down river while we were chatting we watched a guy hook into 2 fish in consecutive casts.1st fish he lost 2nd he dragged 3 or 4 feet up onto the beach before he could identify if it was a wild or a hatch[It better be a Hatch]Chris said and luckily for the guy it was too.The river was cleaning up a Tad by the end of the day too.

I was out this morning, until I was finally chased away by the rain.  River was very dirty, and even saw a few small trees float by with practically no visibility by noon. Water is almost back up to what it was on the 20th, and still on the rise last time I checked.

Heya Chris and others the location of that mess is just up past the tamihi bridge on the left side, not rite where there is camping with 1 or 2 outhouses its 200ft up from there.
The only problem its a steep 20ft drop down, very dangerous I was gonna go down and get it all and pile it up on the side of the road but I woulda slid down there and not be able to get back up.
We need a rope and 2guys, one down below to tie and the other to drag up.
Yeah its that steep, the junk isnt that close to river its actually up higher so it will prob stay for awhile.
I really wanted to clean it up but I was by myself and it wasnt do able its dangerous be carefull.
The next time I go there ill find a way to get that junk up somehow, if someone else doesnt pile it up on the side of road 1st.
Theres a few garbage bags down there too, I wouldnt mind dropping it off at buddys house if we get an address?

Isn't the city responsible to clean this kind of stuff up?  Maybe police to investigate?
Cause if it weren't for good samaritans, how would the garbage ever get cleaned up? And yes, cleaning this garbage is not a one man job.

I walked through this garbage yesterday, and my guess is there was probably a good amount that had been thrown into the river besides the stuff on the bank.  Hopefully karma catches up with this type of scum.

First time steelheading today.  Caught my first steelhead this morning on a fly I tied myself - 10 minutes in and halfway through my first run, about a 10lb hatch.  Tried to do the elegant thing and land it with the net but it spat the hook at my feet while halfway out of the net and took off.  No more action for the rest of the day until I went back to the same spot about 3:30, and picked up this hatchery buck.  Didn't mess about with this one and got it straight onto the bank!!!!

Weighed it at Freds was 6.95lbs so not a huge one, but happy to have been so lucky on my first trip, and pleasantly surprised that you can catch steelhead on a single hander with a $40 type 6 sink-tip!

Fishing in early to mid morning was not bad with some action around, with water visibility at around 2 feet.
Almost no action in the afternoon as visibility dropped to less than 1 feet when I left at 4:30 PM.

Had a nice hookup fishing the pockets and after a short 20 second burst of speed up river the steel broke lose . Still , it made my  day  8) . The snow was coming down quite heavily a better part of the afternoon up top .

Search Chehalis hatchery cam in google and check for your self any time.  It is currently blown but could swing in by tomorrow if it cools off and the rain stops.

I hereby officially present you the unofficial Chilliwack River visibility formula:

X = C : 2

Where "X" is Chilliwack River visibility, and "C" is Chris's personal estimate.  :D

For Example:  X = 18" / 2 . Therefore, X=9"

Trust me, it works! :)

Fished all day the upper and mid river.
Slab, Ranger, Borden had excellent visibility of 3+ feet.
Mid river around Allison had nice green water of 2~3 feet viz.
Tamahi Pool and lower was gray at 1~2 feet.
Took a peak at Peach Road in the afternoon and it was around 1 feet and gray.
Very windy in the lower river.

Guys, stop the bull when reporting river conditions...please.
The Vedder is blown and was blown early in the afternoon.

The day started with a nice mid river with 18" visibility and even more in the Upper. As the rain crept in around noon, things went downhill quite fast.

Here's a picture at Borden at around 2:00 PM, well before the worst of the rain hit:

And here's a picture taken from theTamihi Bridge at 3:45 PM today:

I can imagine it's much worse now as I type this.
Stay at home tomorrow, go to church, tend to the 'honey-do' lists...the river will not recover for the Sunday crowd - unfortunately.
That is an honest assessment and whoever tells you anything different is plain BS-ing you.

According to the graph it came up 10 centimeters late in the day and has dropped half of that already . It may have chalked up at Borden Creek at 2 pm but by the time I was finished just before noon the water did have about 2 feet at the Crossing . But don't believe me , I'll can just go back to keeping info to myself . I live pretty close to the river and see it all the time .

I doubt it was 21 degrees. Its only a couple degrees outside here in Maple Ridge. The Vedder should be fine as its been cold and the snow line should be dropping.

Very windy today.  Wasn't too bad in the upper reaches (where the crowds were definitely out).  I did not get to the river until noon (son had a soccer game).  But I did find a nice run above the canyon that I had to myself for about ten minutes before two others come to join me.  The water was a bit green but with good visibility.  I fished a couple of runs in the upper reaches and one in the lower end but did not see any fish caught.  I fella down below did say he and his bud caught 3 earlier in the morning up top.

Not much snow to speak of and no wind, yet. Check the radio reports and traffic cameras in the AM before you leave. They say the cold and wind is coming so tomorrow maybe the best of the next few. :-\

Probably around 4 feet vis in upper, 3 in mid.

Dennis did I say I was going fast? did not mean to give the impression that I was ripping in poor conditions,  just hit a really greasy section at about 50k and did a slow mo 180. This was at about 630 am and by the time I left around 12 the roads above the Tam bridge were pretty good. Nice one ED sticking around with that guy, seen him on the river a lot, was his truck drive able when he got it towed out?

Just a warning for all you Vancouver (or elsewhere) folks who think: because you have SNOW tires on you'll be OK.
I've done the Tokyo drift with STUDDED snows and have even come close to having to change my underwear when I had chains on.
ICE is not snow, go slow when you're unsure and never be sure.

Wieght in the back will help for traction particularily in the snow but ICE is a different creature.

There's a bunch of folk who live in the area, fish it, drive it all the time who may know the route well enough to know the slick spots but you don't have to keep up.
And for all the faster folks: give the slow, new to the road guy/s some room.
If they're going way to slow; flash 'em, don't crowd 'em.
The only thing worse than a nervous, paranoid driver is one who's pushed beyond thier comfort zone.

Give yourself some extra time and drive with caution.

Also the forecast for Vancouver is snow in the afternoon on Saturday.
NOTE: Chilliwack may recieve snow sooner, check the forecast.

Goodluck, see ya out there.

The roads were fine today, but the edge of river is ice ,about a foot up the bank in some places.I was trying to land a fish mid river today and took a dive into about a foot deep along the edge.I jumped out as fast as I fell in and the Guy beside me asks if I'm okay ::).
I landed the Hatch doe and was more than happy to Quit before noon for a change
The winds were blowing hard and cold down the valley ,even mid river today and water is getting lower every day,Clarity is perfect with just a tinge of glacial grey 4 or 5 feet of vis
Was glad I remembered my pull over the fingertip gloves today cause exposed skin got numb fast

Useful for road conditions early morning....  http://www.drivebc.ca
Use the cams along HWY 1.  Usually if you don't see any concrete, its gonna be a long slow and dangerous drive.

Although I prefer a little color, fishing yesterday and seeing the river running clear for the first time in a long time was sure nice for a change. Hopefully temps will stay relatively low alowing the snow to melt gradually without creating a mess of the river once again.

I had my 10 year old daughter out flicking flies this morning.  We did not catch any fish either, although I had a couple of tugs.  We headed to the Show afterward and she did not get one there either.  They should have let her use flies.  I had her casting in the Sage casting pool and she definitely has the form down.  Took her over to the archery range and she popped the cobra right in the nose.  A regular sharp shooter.  Dropped her off at 3 and headed down to watch the Giants get shellacked by the Americans.  At least the Canucks won in Anaheim.  Quite a full day.

Best day yet of the year for me, water was mint for most of the day but as P said pretty poor vis by the end of the day. On a side note, 20+ fish taken from KWB on Tuesday, seems a fresh push of fish has come in. That's why there were 15 or so cars there when I drove by this morning.  :D

My favorite conditions this morning, river on the rise, maybe a foot of visibility, a perfect cloudy so the fish arent spooky, and they start moving out of the canal up river, and enough rain to keep the lightweights off the river, oh and of course catching a nice Steelie in the first hr out.

It was okay i guess.  Raining pretty hard, visibility was deteriorating pretty badly as the day wore on.  Fished the upper, finished up at Allison and I'd say it was around a foot, maybe 18".

fished the bailey bridge area for a few hours this evening, vis was at least 3 ft. Only saw 3 guys the whole time, only thing I caught was a wicked buzz

drove over the crossing last night and the river was only 1 foot of vis. i cant see it being 3 feet in the canal at all. buddies say the upper was barely fishable at times with all the rain. it would go from 2 feet of vis to almost none then clear up a bit. with the heavy rains last night i would give it a day or 2.

Fished all day from Lickman all the way up to the Ranger Run.
Water condition was perfect mid to upper river and Vedder Crossing was green with maybe 3 feet of viz when I left just before it got dark.
Lickman area was turbid in the morning with around 2+ feet of viz and likely improved in the afternoon.
Beautiful day to fish.

I didn't land one today, but from what I saw and heard along the way today, fishing is not bad.
Some big wild fish were being caught in the last few days.
As I saw many photos of those fish, no BS in what I was being told about their size and numbers.
Overall, as expected, not as many fisherman as early in the season which is a plus.

Fish can be caught throughout the system until May, but of course the upper section will start having more fish as they travel up and stage to spawn. The likelihood of encountering more coloured fish also becomes bigger in the upper section as the season progresses.

Here is a video that we did last April in the lower section of the river.

I concur.  Fished all three sections and it was crystal up top, but only a foot at the middle.  The lower was not much better, still less than 2 feet.  Did not have a bite all day.  Even tried for trout in the canal, but nothing there, despite a good stone fly hatch around 3pm.

Viz was excellent in upper river. Mid river around Thompson Park area had 2 feet of viz in early afternoon.
Dropped by Peach parking lot on the way home at 7 pm and water was green with viz of around 2~3 feet. Very fishable.

Steelheading is more about finding the fish than anything else.  It's not like salmon fishing - that's for sure!  I ran into a guy who was on his 10th trip with no fish hooked!  IMHO, it's a huge advantage if you live near the river and can fish it almost every day and get to really know the runs.  Coming in from Vancouver - I find it's tough...esp. when I've got to be home at a reasonable time to take over parenting!  LOL.  I've been out 5 times this year - hooked 3 and landed one, with two days of nada.  So don't feel too bad!   ;)

As you drive up and down the river, you will see spots where there are cars parked at all times.
Normally as most fisherman don't prefer to walk long distances from their cars, those areas are good spots to check out.
When you see people hook or land fish make a mental note of the spot so that you could comeback later to fish that spot.
Also, don't be afraid to ask people on the river for advice, many times they will tell you some good spots to try out.
However, asking those same questions on the internet would not get you very far.

Yea I wouldn't waste your time.
I live 5 mins walking from the river and I won't even go take a look at the upper because it's inevitable that it's out.
Hell even the LAKE I went to yesterday only had 1 foot of visibility.

It was great conditions in the upper at Borden, but no fish.  The lower looked pretty cloudy so I headed over to the Stave.  Had a good evening rise happen around 7 pm, nice size trout rising all around me, had a couple of nibbles but no takers.  Some guy got a couple of steelhead though, according to the fellas locking up the gates.

Fished for 2 hours this morning under ideal condition. Maple Leaf Drennan did not go down but an angler caught a fish where I had fished 30 minutes before. ??? Not a lot of anglers out in the Lower, for a Sunday.

Dropped by Peach parking lot at 7:30 PM on my way home and water is gray/green with less than 1 feet of visibility.
Upper river visibility also started to deteriorate late in the afternoon, but was still fishable upstream of Allison.

depends on the temperature as much as the amount of rain....if it gets too hot too fast then you have the same effect with high water due to the freshet...best scenario right now is for it to stop raining, but maintain a nice cool temperature up on the mountains.

Kudos to you, SF. It's people like you that truly make a difference!  :)

As said earlier, by all means provide the authorities with the info of the offending individual.
A hefty fine and some publicity could help the river immensely.

My hat's off to you (and a cold beer is on me if we cross paths).

once your garbage is on the curb it is considered public property if you dump it then even more so. I have learned things like this by watching some police shows (such as Cold Case files). I still disagree with posting it publicly (i did see it when it was up)

clarity today in the morning was around one foot by mid river.   I didn't check the upper side but clarity in lower was around 1.5 to max 2 feet.  overall the condition was good.
I left by 10AM and don't know what happen after, but rain was stopping by that time.   Now it should have improved even better.  Water was not high.

to bad they were probably above the crossing and you wont be able to fish them anymore after Saturday because the river closes above the crossing bridge and goes "FLY ONLY" below for the month of May  ;D

anybody got a clarity update to post from today ?? I notice its gone up a bit on the graph so im wondering how dirty its gotten. Thanks

so you can only float fish below te crossing for may?? where is considered the crossing?

"The Crossing" is the bridge over the river at Vedder Crossing (the iron trestle bridge).  The river below that is open to "Fly Fishing Only" and to quote the regs:
"fly fishing … angling with a line to which only an artificial fly is attached (floats, sinkers, or attracting devices may not be attached to the line when fishing is restricted to "fly fishing only”).

Not so Milo ;) While walking Sidthedog this morning I saw a Fishery Officer checking anglers licenses.  Great to see an enforcement presence on the Vedder.

Good to hear the authorities were out.  :)
Would be nice if they showed up on weekends too, when all the weekend warriors and yahoos are out (including myself! :D)

I'd really like to be checked at least once this season. I fish rather often, yet never get checked...it's frustrating. Makes me wonder where does all that money we pay go?

Only isolated showers.  I was standing on the deep side bank looking into about 6 feet of water and could not see the bottom, and a log that was protruding from the depths disappeared about 3 feet down into a milky haze.  The colour is probably from melting snow runoff rather than rain, it just accumulates the further down you go.  It was beautiful today. I  took my 11 year old daughter out for another crack at fly fishing.   She was fishing a little backwater eddy below the CPR bridge run when an eagle swooped down and picked a whitefish out of the water right next to her line.  She says the eagle stole her fish that was just about to bite her fly.

Still fairly cool and not too much rain today. What time are you leaving tomorrow? If not too early I can check it for you in the AM.

Milo, just checked at Lickman and the river is plenty fishable at his time but it has rained overnight and is raining again so hopefully it will hold for you by the time you arrive.

The rain is coming down pretty hard; the water gauge shows river is on the rise...not worth it.  :'(

Thanks Chris and Dave.

Hey all,

Any chance we'll have a bit more time until the rivers gone for a while?  It's been warming up but not sure if we're "there" yet.

Tough call as there is lot's of snow waiting to come down.  Fairly cool as I type; when Sidthedog and I were out around noon at the Lickman area, I thought the vis was about 10" ; I 'm hoping for a fishable day tomorrow, targetting char.  Sadly, it could be over fast if we have more rain or warm weather.
Go Canucks ;D

Water was fine :), at least until I left around 11.  One hookup and quick fall off of something about 16" was all I could find.

Milo nailed it ;) This river could get real ugly if it stays warm and worse, if it continues to rain.  There is a lot of snow in the hills.
