Hey guys and gals
I am just posting this to see what kind of interest there is in having a Steelhead derby in the next couple of months, once again if we are to make this happen we are going to need a lot of support from members here and the fishing community (tackle shops) etc.
I think a good time to hold this derby will be the last weekend of February
please respond to this post if you are interested in entering
Thx in advance for helping to gather together some great prizes once again
Rick aka Trophy Hunter

I think we should donate all the proceeds to Alexandra Morten's cause.
-
Unfortunatley living in the north, I wont be able to participate, but will gladly donate a prize pack of various Steelhead plastic baits. Trophy Hunter let me know where I can send a package. bullhead5000@hotmail.com
Good luck everyone!

That would be a great idea. ;D

That would be a great idea. ;D
Yeah, proceeds towards the Salmon Coast Field Station would be awesome. It's the station where most of the research has been conducted from in regards to the Broughton Archipelago pink and chum salmon runs. I spent this spring volunteering there. Alexandra visited numerous times, and I had the pleasure of cooking a big chinook for the research staff while she was visiting. It's really a good cause. I hope this idea can be taken seriously! :)

We'll make it sticky in a few weeks from now when the date gets closer and the derby info is more finalized. For now I think people are bumping it up steadily anyway so it should still get plenty of attention. :)

I've got the day off already so i am in for sure :)

Are you sure they want it. They did not want it last time.
-
Steelhead Society would probably take it with open arms
-

Yes I am sure, the individual that made that comment is no longer associated with this organization, since that time I have been in contact with Carl Eichler of the C.R.A.C. and he is very excited about the funds we will raise.
In my opinion the C.R.A.C. is the most deserving of our money because it will be directly put back into the river we all use, and obviously the river we will be holding the derby on.

Thanks TrophyHunter. I'm not sure how that story came about, that CRAC did not want the proceeds from last years derby, but it was wrong. Glad Carl has clarified this issue and as another director of this group I say thanks. At present we fund nutrient enrichment and habitat restoration projects on the C-V - new money will go to projects like these.

Your best to set something up with Rick to get this too him as I am not sure if I will be able to make it this time around.

Rick
I sent you down a package of some 6" Steelhead worms and a box of 405 plastic unscented salmon eggs for a prize. Should see it in 3 days or so.
Good luck everyone.
Greg

Thx greg I received it yesterday morning, there is enough eggs for many steelhead seasons :)
Great donation !!

im in were is it goin to be ???

Well I have some bad news, I have been working on getting prizes for the derby this year and I am afraid that the support we have had in past years re donations is not there this year.
I was tinkering with the idea of taking some of the entry money to buy a decent prize but it doesn't seem right, anyone that has sent me prizes, please get in touch with me so I can return it to you.
Once again I am sorry, it looks like we would have had a decent turnout.
Maybe next year we will have better luck with donations and can once again get this derby going.
Cheers TH
-
why dont you keep the derby on just with no majour prizes? like just a first, second, third and the smaller thing as raffle prizes, and for the worms and 405 eggs seperate them into smaller quantities :)
-
It's not really all about the prizes is it?
-
--I can't make it to the derby but don't cancell...
--If I could make it I'd take a "high 5" for first place.
--Once you cancell it is difficult to get these going again.
--If the intent is a fundraiser then go a % of entry fee to charity... if fundraiser not the main idea then go 100% pay out of entry and random draw for donated prizes.
--On local big fish derby's we go 50% first, 30% second 20% third with draw for donated prizes. To reduce the number of fish kept just to get a prize we keep the top three weight fish posted so participants can check and not bring in smaller fish... draw for prizes at final weight in and must be present to collect. That way most will come to final to see both the first three fish and who donated the prizes.
-
Why not have just a prize derby. 10- 20 dollar entry and between the 3 top fish the money can be split. Too bad its not working out like the first couple derbys.
-
Thats a bummer Man,I agree with Skaha and Big Fisher that just getting out for the day with a chance at bringing in the big fish or not is just worth having the Derby Rick. I'm sure you've already gathered quite a few smaller prizes and so what if we don;t have any major sponsors lined up,I'm sure with a little gente nudging Fred and Rod will help sweeten the pot for you to continue with the Derby as planned, just say en is all 8)
-
Why do we enter these derbies is it for the prizes or the pure enjoyment of trying to catch one of these amazing fish.By reading and listening to alot of fishermen in my opinion it is for the chance to get out will a bunch of other people that share your same interest. Please keep this Derby going and do exactly what you intended to do with the money by donating it to a good cause and don't worry about the prizes. As others have said maybe just do a raffle with the donators consent and if you feel compelled to hand out some cash prizes for first, second and third I bet you would get the winners even donating the money back. Please don't cancel this Derby.
-
Keepyour derby on,its not just the prizes, good camaradie is much needed on the flows these days, most guys check their egos at the door and just enjoy the company and a day out i'm sure some businesses have benefitted from the word of mouth put on this site by Chris and others, and they should step up to the plate with a small donation whether it be a meal from resteraunts or food donation for a cook out at the end of the day. helli will even donate a huge pot of my famous seafood chowder, rally round boys have some fun.
-
Rick - I agree with the others... I'm sure that a general consensus could be made with what you have collected/been promised. All and/or the majority of the proceeds go to the cause (every little bit helps). We get to have a meet and great and have an opportunity to swap stories in person (like the good old days) as opposed to digital bits and bytes.
Plus - it gives us a 'charitable' reason to go out fishing that would not put us in the bad books with our significant others. :D
Besides - I already marked in INK on my calendar :(
-
TH, sorry about the bad news, but thanks for your efforts. :)
-
Keep it on man!!
-
I am afraid that it is a no go for this year, if you all want to still organize a fish in of some type for that day I am game, that way we can still all get together at the cedar run in the afternoon and maybe have a bite to eat.
Due to time retraints and lack of sponsors a derby is not possible this year
cheers TH
-
sad to hear about the derby, next year maybe? a fun filled day of fishing with forum members sounds like a good plan b...
-
is the date still the same ?
-
Sure why not.... everybody has already made plans for fishing that day
Sun feb 27th
I guess we can meet at 2pm at the cedar run like planned
lets get a list of food and bevvies together

Id like to pass of a prize for the derby if someone could kindly deliver it for me.
-
Firstlight, I'm planning on still going - already booked off the day with approval from my missus ;D Besides - I have yet to test the waters this year. Better reason than ever now. I even got me some of those GLX eggs that Dion has been successful with. Maybe this will be my year for my first steelhead. :)
Drop me a line so that we can arrange a meet-up.
-
I will bring a large pot and will be making hot chocolate, can anyone bring styrofoam cups ?
TH
-
I can do that - how many should I bring?
I'll bring along a couple of garbage bags too - wouldn't want Chris to be upset at us.. :D
-
David i sent you an email with my contact info.
Thanks.
-
Got the email thanks - Question to all - are we still going to meet with the impending very cold weather??? My missus says I'm crazy - but I would still like to go.
-
Ahh forget it ill give it to some other cause.
Have fun folks.
-
So who is going to make it to the cedar run this Sunday ??? I just want to make sure that there will be people showing up if I am going to bring hot chocolate to the river;)
please let me know by responding to this post
cheers TH
-
I'll be there rain or shine (with some cups and garbage bags)! A wee bit later in the morning if the roads are frosty.
This will be the year I catch the Silver Ghost... I hope :D
And no worries FL - I was busy (working OT) the last couple of evenings and as such, apologise for not getting in touch sooner.
-
I won't be able to make it out this Sunday , doesn't look like there was alot of interest in a fish in anyways, hopefully some of you will still be able to get together for a great day of fishing

Thanks for your efforts TH.
