I have two sons, 5 and 7. i enjoy taking them out fishing and the 7 year old is getting pretty good at casting. I would like to upgrade their rods and reels as they are just cheap junk. Any suggestions of what I should buy? They mostly will be used for small fish, trout, pikeminnows etc. Thanks for any help you may have.

~$100 will get you a Shimano Sedona 1000FD and a decent spinning rod (Berkley Tactix, Okuma SST, St Croix Triumph for a little more)

Berry's Tackle is having their annual spring sale next week. They should have some outfits for beginners.

get them into fly fishing :) i was 5 when i started fly fishing. but if you cant fly fish just go to berrys sale and look around, and also at army and navy i have seen some good looking spinning reels and rod combos for abound 60-100 bucks.

kufa makes a 5 footer that is very soft, and a great rod to bring in stocked trout with. i think it runs around 50 bucks, and sea run had some last time i was in there.

IMO, Spend the money on a good reel and don't worry too much about the rod (unless, of course, you plan on using it yourself.)
At that age the kids biggest thrill is catching more so than sensitivity, etc;
In a few years when they understand it better you can upgrade the rods.
And at 5 and 7 the rod is more likely too get broken than the reel.
I still have a couple of my spinning reels from when I was a kid (before the Beatles broke up)
Couldn't even tell ya where the rods are.

Canadian tire has a sale on an abu 6'6" graphite rod and reel for 29.99 reg 79.99 would be a good rod for your kids. http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Fishing/RodReelCombos/PRDOVR~0785513P/Abu%252BGarcia%252BSpecialist%252BSpinning%252BCombo%25252C%252B6-ft%252B6-in.jsp?locale=en (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Fishing/RodReelCombos/PRDOVR~0785513P/Abu%252BGarcia%252BSpecialist%252BSpinning%252BCombo%25252C%252B6-ft%252B6-in.jsp?locale=en)

--Check out "N Gage" on line web site and at Canadian tire in penticton so assume at the coast as well.
--This stuff is for your Kids right!! N Gage is intended to appeal from Kids to College and young at heart..
--Now you might get N Gage gear as a joke gift from your buddies as a 40th, 50th or 60th birthday present, but its no joke. Functional and fresh in a reasonable price range.
--It's the whole package.. including hoodies, T shirts, gear bags and hats all in urban skate board style.
--If you get any hassle from your fishing buddies when you borrow the gear... hay... you got it for your kids but I wouldn't count on them lending their gear to you.
--Wear your Sage fly shirt or Shimano jacket with colour matched fishing gear... Boooaring... try N Gage
--PS: I don't work for N Gage or have any of their equipment and this isn't copied from an infomercial... I just saw it on line and Candian tire and think its a fresh idea for attracting people to the sport.

I bought my 5 year old and my 9 year old a couple of Roddy Lite spinning setups. One was pink one was blue. They light up when reeling. I think we paid $40 each. The are a decent spinning setup and they are fun for the kids with it lighting up. The reel seems to be just fine and not really cheaply made unlike those other kids ones like the Barbie or Nemo fishing rods. I also just replaced the line it came with.

Don't spend more than 30 bucks on a combo and you'll do well
