Title: Chilliwack River, September 28th 2013
Post by: brownmancheng on September 28, 2013, 10:47:57 AM
Well I slept in again.... :-[

Woke up in a panic and headed out to chilliwack. When I arrived at 730 the chosen spot there were quite a few coho on the beach. Speaking with other anglers, the consensus was first light bite was quite all right.  :P

No love for me although I did manage to break my rod on a pink hump trying to deep water land/release.

While at Fred's getting new rod I also picked up some roe. I had read bad reports about the quality to which the staff said if there's ever a problem with it let them know and they will make it right. I found the quality to be quite good (although one mushy spot) the eggs were soft but stayed together quite well.

Headed mid river next still dreaming of those elusive silvers. After a long hike in settled on a nice little run without much pressure. Wouldn't you know it, the bait brought two nice springs to hand and several other long line releases.

All in all great day on the river! Weather was good and hopefully water turns around quickly after the storm. Still looking for my first vedder coho of the season!!! Mmmmm....... Coho .ughgghhh (Homer Simpson)

Saw some coho rise and a fair number of springs...all tight lipped, threw everything at them, nothing doing, just pinks. Ugg. the river started to really color up when we left at 1 ish. Mid river for us.

If the rain in Walnut Grove is any indication of what's to come in Chilliwack the river will be toast by now and for a while. I could swim in my yard right now, It's close to blowing out ???

Stratocaster and I were able to limit out on hatch cohos this morning...on the "secret sauce" roe.    ;D ;D ;D  Great morning!  Hopefully this is only the beginning of more to come.  Also, I hope the river doesn't blow out and change too badly with all this rain that has arrived.  We'll see...

I was questioning my "secret sauce" roe, but I had an unprecedented day on the Vedder (how I imagined it was supposed to be) and am now mollified. Thank you pinks, you were greatly appreciated.

were you lucky enough to catch all 4 hatch, or did you catch some wild too? I had a good day upriver by tamahi, caught 20-30 pinks, kept one chromer. Guys were catching springs, saw one landed and it was atleast 20lbs.

Is it just the lighting why they don't look so bright ?

@humpy....yes all 4 hatch and 2 I lost but never had the chance to see what kind of salmon they were.
@brownmancheng....yes I guess it's the poor lighting and I was just using my phone cam to snap pictures.

Ok, what about distance from float to pencil weight? Do you use the wool knot when using roe?
Title: Re: Chilliwack River, September 28th 2013

It will depend on how deep the pool you were fishing, so basically it is a trial and error thing. I will normally adjust my float from my weight from time to time to locate where the fish are suspended in the water column. This info I learned from the veteran fishers of this forum.

Personally, I don't use any wool when using roe. You will learn lots of good info from this site as you go along.

Sorry you mean the egg loop for the wool knot? Yes you need that knot to tie the roe.

It depends how deep is the water . From float to pencil lead it can vary from 1 to 7 feet , then from pencil lead to hook ( leader ) it should be 12"-30" , im always around 16-24" . I put my bait on the hook and im good to go

Ok, so just try one depth, and if it doesn't work try something else, ok thanks guys. So I use the same knot I use for the wool for the roe?

No worries man. Yup, just use the same wool knot for the roe and happy fishing.

I was fishing last year for coho with roe, not sure if it is me or the knot. I was using the same knot I use for the wool and I put the roe through the loop and once I tightened the knot, the hook would be slanted, is this normal?  Thanks again.

Yeah that's normal with using roe.

Oh ok, thanks. I though that maybe that would affect the hook set.

The water current is going to make it swirl all over the place and twist in every direction anyways.

Yea, I realize that but the hook being slanted was making me worried.
