Just like every other year, I made sure that I spent the opening day of the coho salmon retention at my regular spot, in the afternoon during the incoming tide. Every other opening day has yielded pretty good results, not this year unfortunately. Out of the 15 or so anglers fishing from 2:00pm to 7:00pm, I landed one of three fish out of the group, a small bull trout. The other two were wild coho jacks, both came at the same time at around 5:00pm. There were no other bites, indicating the fish were simply not there today.
