I am cleaning my pin for the upcoming steelhead season. Ive noticed that maybe the first 100 ft. of my Maxima ultragreen is faded in color compared to the rest of the line on the spool. This line was put on in early September. Ive noticed this in the past and always wondered when is a good time to strip off line. I usually strip off about 10ft every 3rd or fourth outing. To strip off 100ft seems a bit much. How often do u guys respool?

I use maxima 15lb. I have my pin loaded up with backing, then about 75 yards of mono.
i re spoil at least 2 times a year. I fish 2-4 days a week.

Really :o
Why don't you just take off the entire line and reload with the same line.
In so having the unused line to the outside.
Works for me!! ;D

Do you ever check the guides or eyes on the rod for any nicks or abrasions? That might also cause discoloration.

Decolorating is mostly due to sunlight exposure and amount of use. Maxima is great for heavy use and the faded color is fine, I've had ultra green turn to ultra white which still catches fish.
If you got some extra line spools laying around you can always unwind and rewird and unwind it again to the spool, the back 150+ feet or will be almost brand new so you can save a bit of money and use the back half. It might take a bit of time to do all that work without power tools.

I load mine with backing and only have about100 yards of mono.
Respool with mono (maxima) when the need arises.
Mono is cheap for a 100 yards.
But then again some folks use one hook the entire season.

Check the line for signs of wear... Discoloration shouldn't be too big of an issue if the line is not old. I do tend to change my mainline at the beginning of steelhead and Fall salmon season though...

Doh. Don't know why I didn't think of that. I have backing on my spinning reel so I am only topping up the top third of the spool. Never even dawned on me to do that with my baitcaster as well ::)

Try using Berkley Big Game, very inexpensive, long lasting, no memory and very good knot strength, it's my line of preference for my center pins, only the Big Game though all other Berkley lines are kinda crap for you cp.

I actually just put on some Berkeley stuff, can't remember its exact name but its clear. So far I like it but I've only used it a few outings. I'll give it all steely season and see whether it gets tossed for another brand. Never have liked the Big Game stuff. I too load up my pin with backing and then 100-150 yards of mono

I spooled up my pin(no longer have) and levelwind at the end of last season with Berkley Pro Spec. 20lb Pro Spec has same diameter as 15lb Maxima. I'm pretty happy with it so far. Can't remember cost.
