Title: What size split ring and hook to replace treble on Vibrax Spinner
Post by: cabro on June 30, 2021, 11:12:37 AM
Just wondering what size split ring and hook to replace treble on a Vibrax Spinner?

The included siwash hook seems extremely large and likely to do unnecessary damage to the fish.

Do you know the # of the spinner blade? For a typical Metz style #3 that use for coho etc I use a #2 Gamakatsu Siwash.

I’ve switched from the gammies to the mustad ultra point open eye siwash hooks. For a #4 blue fox a #1 or #2 hook works for me

Edit: The mustad sizing is different then the Gammies

they are a good hook. I like that they are not bright silver. The size seems to be at least one up from standard; a #4 is about equivalent to a #2 standard.

Are the Mustad's now called "Big Game"? Can't seem to find the ultra point open eye siwash on their site anymore.

Just stop using the old dinner bell and go with Kodiak Custom Tackle Spinners. They catch more fish IMO.

But if you must use the dinner bell, I swapped out those garbage factory hooks for a #4 Mustad Ultrapoint Siwash Open Eye hook. These hooks are amazing. I personally have 25 packs of each hook size ranging from #3 to #8 in my den and replace factory hooks on casting spoons, trolling spoons and Spinners all the time. The only beef I would have with them is, you REALLY have to set the hook HARD to get the hook deep. If you don't, the hook won't be deep enough.

Thanks for the hook recommendation and i'll take a look at the Kodiak Custom Tackle Spinners as well

Just wondering what size split ring and hook to replace treble on a Vibrax Spinner?  The included siwash hook seems extremely large and likely to do unnecessary damage to the fish.

What fish species are you targeting?

I don't fish spinners much and prefer spoons.  Because I typically fish for salmon but can also bi-catch smaller species such as cutties and bulls, I swap all my hooks for trailing hooks with a Owner, Barbless No-Escape #4.  They are small enough to limit damage to smaller fish (particularly eye penetration .....urgggh) and will hold bigger fish up to the 10-15 lbs range.  Above that I change to a #2.

Adding a smaller hook will set the hook closer to the spinner blade and may reduce hook engagement.  Therefore, you might want to set the hook further back using three split rings or a combination of split rings and a swivel.

Mostly targeting Coho
