Title: Alouette River Management Society Notice re: abuse of spawning salmon
Post by: RalphH on October 31, 2024, 10:32:04 AM
I picked up this notice from Facebook. Previously there had been reports of people using landing nets to capture spawning salmon and packing out numbers of them (ie several not dozens not hundreds) in garbage bags. I have long thought opening chum much above 216th street to be a dumb idea since there are large numbers of spawning salmon from  there to the fishing boundary at Allco Park.  I would say the same for opening angling on any similar small stream, creek etc.

Alouette River Management Society (Oct 30, 2024)

Help Protect Our Spawning Salmon! 🐟
We have had multiple reports over the past two weeks of community members witnessing members of the public throughout the Alouette Watershed, but specifically at Maple Ridge Park  fishing with illegal hooks and nets, kids playing in the river on spawning areas, and overall people bothering spawning salmon. We're incredibly disappointed to hear of these situations and want to use this opportunity to educate the public about the importance of staying OUT of the water during spawning season (late September-December) and to be responsible and check fishing regulations and what equipment is allowed.
During this crucial time for salmon spawning, we’re asking everyone to stay out of the river, people, kids, dogs, horses and to double-check fishing regulations before fishing. Spawning salmon and their nests are especially vulnerable, and even small disturbances can harm their chances of survival and impact future salmon populations.
Please help us protect these incredible fish by keeping a respectful distance, staying out of the water, and following local fishing regulations closely. Your care helps ensure that these salmon can thrive and return year after year. Please help by also sharing this information with your friends and family.  We all love our Pacific Salmon and we others to enjoy them for generations to come.
It is your responsibility to know before you go fishing!

Hey DFO! Step up patrols in the area and start enforcing the regulations. The video making the rounds on social media is horrible to watch and makes me very angry.
