Title: Vedder River Today
Post by: chris gadsden on December 30, 2024, 12:26:58 PM
Took a long walk along the Vedder River today. Wow so many anglers out there, water conditions looked good but so much water. Did not see or hear of any fish caught or hooked.

It was good to talk to a few anglers I know and talk about the good old steelhead days of the past.

Visibility around 1.5 feet this morning, saw 3 anglers fishing around the Lickman parking lot area. Saw one coho salmon in Peach Creek. Bad cold is keeping me from fishing.

What a lovely day, it felt like spring out there. I just went out for walk to check out for areas to fish when I get rid of this cold I have. River was in excellent conditions with a fair number of anglers out there.

It was good to meet a couple of anglers that knew me from this forum. It was nice to talk to one of them about the old days as he had fished the river as long as I have.

No reports of any fish taken but the day was still young.

Took some good natured ribbing about me wearing my Toronto Maple Leaf sweater.

I will have it on when I have a picture with my first steelhead of the year.

Very few anglers on the river when I went out for a walk and check out some runs today.I guess the reason is there is few fish in the system right now.

An angler fell in today while steelhead fishing in the Canal area. Was missing for a while and there was concern for his safey but he called the RCMP around 6:30 tonight and said he was safe.

From Fraser Valley News.

"Chilliwack – UPDATE and good news! At approximately 6:30 PM, the man who was calling out for help called the Chilliwack RCMP and advised that he was safe and was able to get himself off the river.

Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the public and media for their assistance in located this man.

ORIGINAL STORY – On Saturday morning, January 18, (@10:53AM), officers were called to 41877 No 3 Road, Chilliwack for a report of a person in distress in the Vedder River. An unknown man was heard shouting for help and moments after was silent. First responders, including Chilliwack Search and Rescue, attended. First responders located two fishing rods and a green Bass Pro Shop toque, in the water near where the screams were heard but did not find anyone in the water.

Chilliwack RCMP is looking for any witnesses that may have information about this incident or can help us identify the individual. The two fishing rods are a black and red Bass Pro Shop spin castor and a brown and gold 11.5 foot trophy bait castor."

Took a walk along the Vedder River today and not an angler in sight. Where are those harden anglers? When I used to fish steelhead I would be out there. There was a slight NE wind in the Lickman part of the river and there is some shore ice.

I also looked at the Fraser and there is lots of ice flows passing by at Old Orchard Road.

I think the problem is this fishery has moved way beyond what the harden anglers are interested in being involved with anymore. I haven't fished for Steelhead on the Vedder for probably 5 years. Too much of this and that happening along the river for me to get excited about anymore. Chris, you fished Steelhead when anglers were not only hardened, but also respectful of others and the resource that is truly a blessing. I sure do like reading your VRT reports though.

I started fishing steelhead on that river 37 years ago and I have definitely lost interest in the crowds, the crime and the garbage. Back in the day the cold weather definitely didn’t deter me.

So true. I keep thinking about getting my steelhead tag but have not made that move yet.

I have my rod and old Avon in my room that I look at every day but that is as far as I have got so far.

I think of all the days when the rod bent and the line peeled off the close to 60 year old Avon with a beautiful steelhead doing it best to gain its freedom that many did over the years.

Those days one also looked at meeting many friendly fellow anglers also out chasing those silver ghosts or fishing with The Master seeing if I could catch more steelhead than him but that never happened. However one day I had a 5 - 4 lead but he tied it up late in the day. Of course that is not the most important thing, it was having a good time fishing with friends and looking after the fishes home, the river. This is why Rod, myself and some others started the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society in 2002. It pleases me that this group still goes on to this day. Of course the success of this group is because of all the great volunteers that took part in these cleanups, many were from this forum when we had our first cleanup.

After fishing we would head for a coffee or Cookies for a hearty breakfast and relive the morning fishing and fishing days past.

I miss those days with the passing of my dear friends and fellow anglers Lew Chater and Gary Ferguson a few years ago. Memories I cherish greatly.

When I go out there I know very few anglers personally but some do reconize me from writing on this forum since 2002.

Writing this I think I will go out there today sans the fishing equipment, will take my camera instead.

I will start with a coffee and then walk along the river bed in a few places, remembering spots where the rod bent and the line peeled from the Avon.

A pleasant day to walk along the river this morning, very little wind. A good number of anglers observed including I saw a small wild fish landed. At least I saw a rod bent.
