Anyone make your own spinners?
Seems most suppliers are in the states and with the exchange rate and shipping to BC I can't find a place where the price makes sense. To get all the components to build 50 spinners runs 350 bucks after exchange and shipping.. 7 bucks each, does not make it worth while. Not looking to sell, just to build for my own use.

This place is Canadian. http://www.luremaking.com/

Ebay, Temu, Amazon and other similar sites have blades wire etc with free shipping mostly from China.
Berry's used to carry a good selection of lure making supplies but seems to have gotten out of it with the new ownership. Calling a few shops may give an idea what's available locally.

I used to make my own, but mostly recently placed an order with First Strike Lures for pre-made spinners.
https://www.firststrikelures.com/
They (Gord) also sells the components to built your own.
A spinner costs $5.49 USD pre built, or you can buy the components for the same spinner for $4.69 USD. You can also buy components in bulk and if my math is correct, you can get a blade, clevis, body, hook and wire for under $3.00 USD
Shipping is $13.99 to Canada but $3.99 to Washington State. If you have connections in the US, or a mailbox, there are savings to be had there.
You’ll have to do the math for your own order/circumstances, but it appears you can can build your own for well under $7 CA

Have you tried Complete Angler?
-
Have a look at "scarlettlures.ca" or "scarlettlures.com.
This is a small local BC online company that carrys components to build your own spinners and spoons, or to purchase complete assembled units. They have a good selection and the person easy and reliable to deal with. Spinner blades are nice quality and good thickness.
You can order online, or sometimes make arrangements to pick-up (Coq. area, or Campbell River). Great guy to deal with. My fishing friends and myself have always had positve dealings with this company.

thanks for all the suggestions.
Looks like scarlettlures.ca is the winner.
Components for 25 complete spinners 97 bucks, shipping and taxes included
4 bucks each. Not to bad, only way to get cheaper is a different supplier but minimum order is 1000 pieces.

Who bought Berrys baits? I didn’t know the Berry family sold the business. Remember buying fresh dog roe off Ivan Berry back in the day to bar fish for coho on the Fraser. Son Mike and daughter Michelle and boyfriend Len worked in the family owned business for many many years. Guess change is inevitable.

Not the same under new ownership

a couple of years ago I think. Some of the Berry clan stayed on for a while but it's mostly a new crew now.

Asian owned now. Once Ivan and Marilyn(parents and original owners) were gone Mike, Michelle and Len (Len was a partner not the boyfriend) sold the business. Mike Eng still works there, he is the only old time employee left.

in the early days Len was the boyfriend of Michelle that’s how he got into the business. Well at least it’s still operating. Not like what happened with Spud Valley sports in Pemberton.

the Berry family including Len operated the business for a number of years after Ivan (passed away 2010) and Marilyn had more or less retired and then passed away. Though I am not sure who it was (Mike I believe), I was in the shop when it was explained to someone the shop was for sale because they wanted to retire.
Michele was married to Trevor according to on line info.
While I haven't been in the shop for some months, last time I was in it wasn't all that different. Prior to handover I had been noticing a lot of dead stock, stuff that had been in the shop and wasn't selling even at clearance prices. That was all gone.
The local market had changed as well. For more than a few years any job openings they posted asked for people who could speak Mandarin or Cantonese.
Berrys is still a very good shop whoever owns and works there now.

Sad to hear Marilyn passed. She was always nice to deal with.

I grew up with Mike and Michelle. Lots of camping/fishing trips as kids. Ivan and my dad worked on the tugboats together way back in the day when Ivan first began selling dew worms out of the garage. I have lots of great memories from that home/store.

I grew up going to Berry's as any good Richmond kid did - I split my allegiances between Calvin at Nikka and Mike at Berry's. I still do my best to get into see Mike and crew. I haven't seen Len or Mike in quite some time now, but it could have been poor timing on my part. I was in the just this past week and grabbed some gear for hardwater fishing. I try to support my local bait and tackle shops and avoid big box stores like the plague. Yeah, they're not always the cheapest and may have limited supply (compared to Amazon, who doesn't ?) but if they close up you know they aren't coming back and that will be big blow to the fishing community.

Calvin was a great guy. Definitely miss BSing with him.

Mike and Len sold their business, not sure if they are there at all these days.

True! I think Mike continued for a period of time after the sale to make sure the transition went smoothly. I would see Michelle and Len from time to time, but now I only see the other Mike and Kevin and many new faces. I think Mike Berry was hoping to retire and may have well done so. Good on him!

What a decent human being Calvin was. I met up with him a few times steelheading on the C/V system. One particular time he was having a hell of a day with multiple hook ups on steelhead in the spot we were fishing with a few others. Nobody else hooked anything that day. Dude was a great rod. Miss seeing him on the river and in the store.

I grew up in Steveston and I remember when Nikka opened. I was just a kid and would fish on "C" dock and sell shiners, chub and herring and make a couple of bucks for junk food from the Petro Can gas bar, a cone of fries (wrapped in newspaper) from Pajos and more fishing gear from Nikka. It was a great little racket us local kids had going on. We would break down our rods and bungee cord wrap them to the top tube on our bikes and ride the dykes home. These are some of my favourite memories from growing up there... even the cannery smells on a hot summer weekend are thought of somewhat fondly. Hahaha

I worked at BC Packers on the line cleaning salmon in the early eighties. Applied for a job and 15 minutes later was outfitted with an apron, rubber boots and gloves and put on the line cleaning salmon! Lol. Learned how to clean a salmon super fast. Ha ha. Still have the knife I used to clean thousands of fish.

both Mike and Len have been retired for a couple of years now. Mike lives in Ladner & Len moved up to the Faulkland/Enderby area.
