Ok... So it's not as big as Gooey's... Only at 34in and 30in.... ;D

The first fall trip to the Vedder is always exciting. The unknowns can make you very anxious. The river is completely changed since the freshet, new runs and pools need to be located. It's a whole new game.
The expectation was not big, in fact I did not expect to catch anything today. The goal today was more to scout out where I will be fishing this fall, the fish would simply be a bonus.
A late start I had, around 2pm. While getting ready after I arrived, one angler was on his way out. He mentioned that he did not see or touch a single fish since 9am. Those words were somewhat discouraging, but not to worry as I was there to fish for spots. :)
After 30 minutes of walking around, I finally found one section that I thought would be productive. A browse on the river bank saw numerous fresh blood stain, someone must have killed a couple of fish this morning.
What was more exciting was the fact that I did not see a single angler on that 400m stretch of the river. The atmosphere was a lot more relaxing, there was no hurry to catch a fish.
Today's bait was last year's procured chum roe. The cure colour was double hot red, but was only partially coloured so it retained some of its natural orange colour. A size 2 Drennan float was rigged up above the bait. If I had a size 1 (smaller) Drennan, I would be using that instead as the drift was rather slow.
20 minutes went by since I started drifting, but a few rolls and rises kept me confident. Soon after itosh phoned and asked where I was fishing, I landed a small jack that was very acrobatic. :o How exciting! The day was good enough with that fish. Ten minutes later, as Itosh started walking towards be from downstream, I hooked another fish. This fish tapped the float three times like a small trout. Originally I almost neglected the bites but set the hook anyway. The tip of Stryker 2106 immediately pointed down at the water, indicating that was no trout or jack. The timing was perfect, I landed the fish just as itosh arrived. :)
The rest of the afternoon was rather quiet, a few hits and misses. We left soon after the rain started to get heavy.
Good luck to those who are heading out this weekend. :)

Hey good for you Rod :oyou see any big springs lol
-
Does anyone think using spoons would be productive or should I stick to wool. Keep in mind, I never got a salmon yet :-[
-
Nice fish! 8) Not bad for a small trout ;D
-
Deadhead: Hmm.. I saw something that resembles a big brown floating carpet... That might be one? ;D
Carpman: You sure can catch them with spoons and spinners. It all depends on what type of water you are fishing in. Best thing to do is to head down to the river, observe for a long time, and you can usually pick out those who know what they are doing after awhile.
F4L: You're right. There are actually not many days when I've caught fish at first light (ok, let me rephrase that: There are actually not many days when I've caught fish....). Sometimes the bite is totally on at dawn, but sometimes things don't pick up until 9am. Different from day to day.
Koho: ;D

Fishersak: :-[
CJ: Ok I'll be nicer than that, how about from Railway bridge to the crossing? :)
-
Rod: great looking fish! I would like to know a little about the Stryker 2106 rod please. Good for coho and steelhead? Could you handle a spring? What about the action; fast? What about the sensitivity? Line and weight rating? Anything else?

Rodney, are you referring to Vedder Crossing, Tamahi Crossing or Slesse Creek Crossing ?
-
Well done Rodney!!! ;D Nice fish!!
Where?!? Where?!? ;D ;) Hehe
I always answer that one with "in the mouth" or "in about 4 feet of water 15 feet or so from shore..." ;D
-
Norm: Stryker 2106 is perfect for coho and steelhead fishing. Yesterday was actually my first time landing a coho on this new rod. I love it! The action is moderate. It is probably a bit too light for spring. If you go to Stryker Rods (http://www.rodandreel.ca/) website, click on Fishing Rods and then Casting Rods, you'll find a table with all the spec. The price is $379 and Russ allows you to choose the colour of your guides, reel seat, butt, thread etc to go on the rod, basically a custom rod. Ok enough advertising from me now.... ;D
Fish Assassin: Below Vedder River Crossing (by Fred's) to the railway bridge. :)
Gordie: Time to get out and get them. ;) After this water drops again, I think the fishing is going to be unreal during the week.... ;)
Funny that you mentioned 15 feet from sure, I think it wasn't even that, maybe 10. Very surprising!
-
:) Hehee, well it was kinda hard to tell how exactly far out you got him from where I was watching... ;D :D ;)
But yes...I think a pre work fishing trip or two is in order for early next week. Just watching my float will be nice enough. It sure will be nice to give a fishing report for once instead of crying about how I have to get on the river 'someday soon'.
