Title: Capliano Question
Post by: habzrule on November 04, 2004, 07:55:20 PM
hey guys, hope everyone is doing well, quick question...
Are there still fresh fish in the Capilano?  I have a few hours free to fish on Saturday morning and want to go somewhere close, but heard rumours that all the fish left in the cap were boot-like.  Also, when do the Steelhead come in?  I caught a few at the mouth throughout the year, little guys,  but would like to find some larger ones up river.  Thanks , happy fishing!

Hey habz, I'm sure there are a few nice looking fish still kicking around but in my opinion the darkies outnumber them 100 to 1 at least. You might get a keeper but it will take a while. As far as the steelhead situation on the Cap, well you can not retain any steelhead whether they are hatchery or wild. And being that it's a small river system and the numbers of steelhead reflect that I would suggest leaving these fish alone. Other larger rivers allow you to retain steelies because they have a broader base to work with, you might want to try your luck on those rivers and see how you do. Whichever choice you make I hope you have good luck. :)

Athezone is correct. There are a few chromers lurking around but the boots far outnumber fresh ones.

if you are fishing for meat then the cap is not the place to be.  A lot of spings are relatively clean but they are all whites and most of the coho are booted up already.

So max, when do those 15-20+ lb northerns show up???

You're allowed one coho (hatchery) and 2 chum per day on the Squamish.  Trust me, even if you don't get a coho, it's still a blast hooking into bright silver chum over there.  And there are some beauties!  Dark red, dark orange, dark green all work or any combo of those 3 and chartreuse.  Colorados normally work well too, but I haven't hit any in about 1 hours worth of trying a week ago.  Take the time to find a quiet spot, it's well worth it.
