Title: the squish
Post by: mr.pink on May 03, 2005, 03:30:52 PM
on monday we headed up to squamish, for whats probably our last steelhead trip of the year.and after beind skunked my last 5 (thats right 5)trips to the vedder,i was looking forward to breaking the goose egg.
anyway we get there (mile 28),not a soul around, water is coloured with 2 - 2.5 visibility and not to high
we hike for a ways, fish some sweet looking water but nothing.start working our way back to the car, when my bud says i think i got something, sure enough its a 4.5 - 5 lb dolly and me never having seen an ocean going dolly was pretty impressed, and wouldn t ya know it his very next cast another 1,this 1 is about 2 - 2.5 lb,he caught both in water i had just finished fishing.i now figure i m cursed.we fish there abit more, before going to the cheakamus.
we get to the cheakamus.water is nice and clear and not to high.my bud says see that rock i bet there s
1 there,i say go for it and head off upstream to some other nice water,i walk, fish, walk some more fish all
kinds of nice water after about an hour i start to head back,no sign of my bud,but its now raining pretty
heavy so i figure he s in the car.i get back to car my bud is chatting with a flyfisher,he says hasn t been
many fish around this year,he s only caught 1.we say goodbye and he leaves for the mouth of the mamquam,we have a smoke at the picnic table,no fish at the rock?i say, he says nah i covered it pretty good nada, even the fly guy tried,i say well i havn t tried yet my bud laughs says go for it as he heads back to the car.
i go down figure i ll work the tail out, then try the rock,my first cast hit s the far shore i quickly drag it in to deeper water, whew no snag but the drift is going to miss the part of the tail out i wanted to
fish,as i m watching my float i can just see the rock coming into view and the angle of my drift is going to sweep right by it,oh well i think i ll drift the rock(like i did it on purpose, lol) just as my drift is coming to the rock, bang,i set the hook, line starts peeling off,it takes off down river i call my bud no answer now the fish is heading for the far shore,i call my bud again same thing.now i m finaly getting some line back.this time i yell for my friend, whats going on he says "fire in the hole" i yell,he comes running down what is it?
he says, steel i think say i.and after a good battle i finally get a look at her its a 6 - 7 doe, with beautiful red cheeks and faint red lat line she may not be the biggest but she is the prettiest fish i ve ever seen.after a quick pic she was back on her way, cheers.

 sorry it s so long,:)

thx randog.the bad news is i now have steelhead fever, lol.this was only my second steelie, the other was caught the first week of feb,and with water being so cold she hardly fought a couple head shakes and swam right to me,on monday the water was 45 degrees(F) and that little put girl up a great fight,so i now understand what my brother has been talking about all these years.
so now its the end of the season and i m dreaming of steelhead, lol going to be a long summer, cheers.
