Mudslide near Chilliwack closes highway in both directions

By: Evan Kelly/Tamiko Nicholson
A big mudslide caused a section of Highway One between Chilliwack and Hope to close Monday evening. Emergency crews responded at around 6:30PM to a report of a mudslide that happened around Popkum Road on Highway Number One, west of Jones Lake Exit. The slide blocked off all traffic on Highway Number One in both directions. There have been no reports of any injuries at this time, but some people were trapped in their cars due to a fallen power line. BC Hydro says the line took out power for about 2,000 people in the area. A fuel truck was knocked over as well. RCMP and Search and Rescue crews are working together to deal with the slide situation.
