vedder river mar 11
« on: March 11, 2006, 04:45:18 PM »

well i thought i would give a report of the day, started out up top water is really low and clear, fished a couple of runs  made my way down river, and decided to go to the campground. fished right at lickman no hits and also no guys which was alright its hard to get a piece of water to yourself. so i then preceeded down to the gong show,i dont even know what the run is called, maybe it should be called peg leg, any ways i saw about fifteen fish caught a few hatchery . when i first got there i noticed a guy bringing in a fish,he did the sockeye pull and pulled it right on the rocks it was a wild what a joke no one said anything but me i guess, tou could call me the beek. couple of other wild fish were hooked and i thought i should help these guys before i wittness the same performance, they apreciated my help in releaseing there fish.hey guess what ,meatball hooks another fish, and decides to do the same tactics in releasing the fish ,the sockeye pull. this time before he had the chance there was a few of us now that myself the beek, said something the fish didnt get raked across the rocks.i fished lower than the show, and by suprise 2 c-s-o stroll down the beach, i complemented them being there said it was awsome to see them on the river.they also followed a guy up the trail with his fish , i suspect that he didnt have his liscence with him. anyways it was a beutifull day to walk the river, and chat with other fishermen.just hope all of us on this web site that enjoy and respect our fish that we catch, beek up if we see someone like meatball, destroying our resouce.

Good job ko on TRYING to help that guy out on how to release a wild steelhead. After spending two weeks on the river tossing a fly, I witnessed a couple of  "incidents" on HOW NOT TOO RELEASE A FISH and also HOW NOT TO PLAY A FISH. One such incident involved a "fisherman" fighting a +/- 6 lb doe for ummmmm,,,,,,,,20 minutes!!!! Must have been a HOT fish ::)

It's tough trying to give some of these people advice. They look at you like you are crazy or like some like to call me " one of THOSE fly fishing guys". I'm starting to really wonder if we should be putting people thru some type of course (kinda like the hunting one) before we hand out fishing licenses. It doesn't have to be hard, a few pointers on catching/releasing, river ethics and such. And before I get jumped on by some telling me it's the Vedder and I should expect this,,, I say Bull****!! Because the Vedder is as busy as it is, this should be one of the rivers that we should show some common courtesy to our fellow anglers and the fish themselves.

All we can do now is try to inform some of not so experienced anglers and hope they learn and understand where we are coming from when we offer some advice.Put the  fish first people, especially when it comes to the wild ones. They may not be here for some to enjoy in years to come.

I agree with that, although it may be next to impossible to provide that course....but I guess forums like this one are in a way a course of sorts....we have an opportunity here and on the river to pass on the respect and knowledge we have accumulated... maybe the word will get around???? ;) nice work ko, I too have been witness to the "sockeye drag", that fisherman wanted me to take a pic for him, after I explained to him why I was looking at him that way, I think he'll never "drag" a steelie of any sort again!!!

Thanks for the report ko.  As far as dragging fish up on the beach - NO FISH should be treated that way!   >:(  Not just steelies.  Good job trying to spread the word.

it's kind of frustrating when you try and offer advice on how to land/release fish and they get all mad and yell at you thinking they're all high and mighty.
