British Supermarket Chain Stops Cod Sales

Asda, Britain's second-largest supermarket chain, says it will stop selling North Sea cod in about three months.

Asda, owned by Walmart, told The Independent it is taking the action because of a dramatic drop in natural fish stocks due to overfishing. The sale of North Sea cod is expected to be suspended by July.

Asda officials said they've been criticized by British environmentalists for selling endangered fish, such as cod, that are heading toward commercial extinction, the newspaper reported.

Asda says it plans to follow Walmart's example, selling only fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, the London body that checks global fisheries for sustainability and legality. The move could place Asda among Britain's most ethical supermarkets for fish, The Independent said.

Asda officials say they believe the entire North Sea should become a marine conservation zone to halt overfishing, with commercial fishing limited to local boats.

The retailer also announced it will drop swordfish within the next four months, having already removed shark, skate wings, ling, dogfish and Dover sole from its counters, The London Telegraph reported.

Shortage of dogfish? They should ban the sales of dogfish here as well then. Maybe they mean some OTHER kind of dogfish other than ol' mud puppy.

This just means they will go pillage some other species in other oceans....until that's depleted.

The English has used dogfish for fish and chips for decades. It was a cheap substitute for cod.

They call large pikeminnows "white salmon" in the States. Improves the taste factor when the name is palatable. I had heard they eat only dogfish for fisnchps in Britain, so what the heck were they doing with the cod. Or is it printable?

Cod will still be on the menu at fish and chip shops!  Haddock is a close second.  Rarely see Plaice except in restaurants.

Dogfish [lesser spotted dogfish or lsd] are the most abundant of species, or so it seems when I go sea fishing.  When I was a child we had Rock Salmon as Cod was scarce after WW2 and very expensive.

The fishing policies over here stink!  Since the EU fishing agreements our fisheries around the British Isles [Inc Ireland] have been decimated by the huge Spanish fleet.  Our own fleet is virtually non existent.
Having said that some Irish boats are now fishing off the African coast taking huge quantities of fish.  The local fishermen now have to venture further out to sea to catch what's left.  Needless to say many don't return as their boats are only small and built for inshore fisheries.

The quotas caused many millions of tons of fish to be discarded as if you were fishing for your Haddock quota and had already caught your Cod quota, any Cod then caught would be thrown back DEAD.

Crazy rules from Crazy people.
