Saltchuck Vancouver...April 8.
« on: April 09, 2006, 05:58:49 PM »

Hi.

Any salties on this board? If you are..get out and go fishin.

Got a late start at 12 pm after troubleshooting a small electrical problem. Wanted to head out to the Slash area...but dropped off in the pack off Pt. Grey. 15 boats in the area...wondered what the heck was going on..knew fishing was good...but wondering if someone had hauled in a hog or two..

Anyways..we boated multiple legal fish in the 8 to 10 lb range. 3 undersize just under. Didn't see any other boats land legal fish, but did see a few undersize released.

DFO out in force checking for licenses before we got out I heard.

Lots of seals in the area..none that bothered us..I counted 5 heads simultaneously at one point. Needs to be a seal hunt in around Vancouver...those seals are eating LOTS of salmon.

Saw other boats release undersize, saw 1 boat fight a seal for 20 minutes plus trying to get his gear back.

Anyways..

I'll be fishing Good Friday, and guaranteed Saturday or Sunday....I know it. Get OUT on the water.

I'm a salty, but due to technical difficulties with the boat, have not been out in a while on the chuck.

I have all by own gear, so if anyone is looking for an extra guy to run gear and chip for gas, I'll be in van over the next few weeks before heading north, I'll get my fair share up there anyway... ;D 8)

That's cuz the FISH aren't around Bowen right now...at least not in the same numbers they are in English Bay.... my buddy fished the backside of Bowen and off Cape Roger Curtis today and yesterday..didn't find NADA.

I know of a charter firm that has had 2 or more fish between 25" and 30" EVERY single charter this past week, and I know the guides that have been doing it...not to mention performing the same result myself while personal fishing. There are some undersize in there..but to be honest..release those and keep fishing and you'll get your keepers..I did just that myself.

I don't know how long it's going to hold..but this is absolutely fantastic not having to run twice the distance to the Slash from Vancouver to catch nice beautiful RED winter springs.

Maybe in the next 2 weeks the Slash will turn on like it does about this time of year..but at this time...you'd have to be a fool to pass up on Vancouver harbour for the Slash given the local results.

Would be cool if some larger fish show up or the numbers increase..I mean..this is great fishing locally!  :D

Hey Dan the Man...

5 to 6 feet leaders for spoons. 25 lb test.

I use 25 lb test for mainline and 40 lb test on my hootchies. Haven't fished hootchies last few times out there..but at this time of year...lots of action on the hootchies is good. a 3 foot leader should be good. I have an Army Truck on a 3 foot that does great for feeders.

I'll be out on Friday, and guaranteed Saturday or Sunday if the weather is good... CAN"T WAIT!

You betcha Montegobay man...it's ON. I got started at noon..by that time Slayer had 3 keepers and was back at the dock..and here I was just getting started with Pops for the noon to 5!  Time to get out! Haven't heard of any line screamers..usually we get a crack at a few early reds...but nothing yet..interesting to see what happens soon here..

Fact that the seals weren't bothering the fleet tells us that there's lots to eat..and if they ain't following the gear and on the fish..that tells you they're well fed...and you know what that means....

I'll be out Friday and Sat or Sun.

Can't wait...

FISH ON!

Get to know the local guide boats and read up on the various fishing reports. Hang out around a good launch or two and ask the more serious looking sporties where they fished etc. Vanier Park launch..near the Planetarium in Kits is the epicentre for weekend warriors in the lower mainland. Or..you can do McDonald Beach in Richmond..but those are the guys that fish the mouth of the Fraser for Springs...and they rarely motor all the way over to the North Shore.. With the price of fuel..I wouldn't suggest launching there. There is also a ramp at Ambleside..which is very convenient..but pulling out or launching in the rough can be dangerous..not to mention low tide there so plan your trip accordingly.

Cohos start in June...later June for any kind of meaningful numbers. There are some early..but you have to work hard to get on them...and if we get a good dump of rain.they'll cannonball run up the river and saltchuckers will get none. The main run comes in early July..then thereafter it's late August and then October again for the northerns..and they're some nice cohos in there...we're talking like 12 lb plus...but you have to be putting in a few hours to get lucky enough to hook those lockjaws. A couple of years ago we had some great fishing for Cohos in July.they were BIG for Cap fish..averaging 4 to 6 lbs..and there was more than plenty for everyone that even had a clue. I hooked a 15lber in Mid August 2 years ago..she was a beaut!

3rd week of May to early July are like doldrums around Vancouver....unless you can figure out how to hook those fish that are swimming right into the Fraser....there's tens of thousands of them...but few have figured out how to catch 'em with any kind of regularity.....plus there's only tens of square miles of River mouths and 3 arms to fish....lol....

Vanier Park at Kits with probably be the best place for you to hang out to pry for info. I'd even recommend you book a charter or two at that time of year to prod the guide for info....

Hope this helps you out....

KO,

I learned a great deal from the "How to catch Salmon" series of books.

Not sure if still around but i believe it was Alec Merriman and published by Saltaire publishing i believe.

Super basic and very informative. ;)

if you are going to hire a guide KO try Mickey Fin Charters out of Horseshoe bay, ask for Wayne. I used to guide with Wayne  over 20 years ago when I was guiding and I believe he has been doing it the longest.

Wayne's a good guy....however I'd suggest David Korsh of Predator Charters or Bonnie Lee Charters..his name is Kevin out of Granville Island..close to town.  Dave's boat is fastest with twin 225 Mercs...the boat is fast which means MORE fishing time for you. They may fish you around the backside of Bowen..but the real story has been English Bay/Pt. Grey lately and the Horseshoe Bay crowd doesn't fish English Bay very often..at least not recently.. and no one locally has done more charters this past winter than Bonnie Lee Charters in English Bay/Pt. Grey area.....in fact, English Bay has been the most undertold story in years..this winter has been DYNAMITE for consistency..and there is some FANTASTIC crabbing to be had in English Bay which I think Bonnie Charters drops traps for. .. If you fish the morning, and do at least a 5 hour charter, you should get a few good shots at legal fish in the 9 lb to 12 lb range. Otherwise you'll be hooking undersize which are just under..but either way..it's HIGHLY likely you're going to see fish on any given day..I've been monitoring Bonnie Lee's success recently and  EVERY trip they're hooking into at LEAST one keeper and averaging two or three fish to the boatt...not to mention and losing contenders...I know a couple of his guides and they guide in the Charlottes etc..so they know their stuff...

Last Saturday I was out there and hooked into multiple legal fish, and had I not fished the 12 to 5, I believe I could have hooked many more.

If I were you, I'd make a day of it, get together yourself a few buddies, book a DAY charter of local fishing, like an 8 hour trip, pack up lots of munchies, and get ready to have a blast! I mean..you get a cheaper rate that way..and it makes the trip more memorable..and you'll have a better chance to find the fish and get into them.

There's plenty of local operators..to choose from..just make sure you do your homework on which operation gives you the value you're wanting in a fishing trip.

There's lots of operators to choose from...I'd phone 'em all..and see what you come up with. :) :)

just my opinion....
