Finally!  Though I have caught 17 steelhead on the Vedder since I started fishing for them 3 years ago all have been wild.  Today on my second trip this year I hooked up with a beautiful 12.5 hatch doe.  The fish was 29 inches long and 18 inches in girth! 

Now the next thing is dinner tonight for my first taste.

Great Job man!!!     I know how you fell, as it took me a while before I got my first hatchery as well!!! My wild to hatchery ratio is like 20-1!!!

mine was 5-1 this year, and 1-0 last year. Are the Wilds in strong numbers? Does anyone know around how many wild steelhead come back to the vedder to spawn every year?

I had a guy phone the hatchery the other day and he was complaining about only catching wild fish. He asked if this was as good as it was going to get. I can't recall ever hearing someone complaining about catching steelhead, especially wild ones. Does the word" meat fisherman"come to mind. On a parting note one of the locals said he came across two angles who had both killed hatchery kelts.

Interesting!!   I guess all fisheries do get some people who do think such as this!!  But to all other out there that just like to get a Steelhead, hatchery or not, great job guys.  Thanks for the info Buck!!  Hatchery Kelts eh!!

Is it possible that this chap is fishing high up in the system and a lot of the hatchery have been caught and retained in the lower stretchs before they get where he could be fishing. I know in the lower where I fish most of the time, of the 28 I have landed, a third have been wild the rest hatchery.

I concur with Chris' assessment. With the reduced fishing pressure there should be alot hatchery steelheads in the upper section.

I was fishing above Peach and saw 7 wild released in the same run Saturday.  Monday there were 4 hatch.  It seems it depends on the group coming through at the time.

This year, I have had a few more hatchery fish than I normally get.  Probably around 25% hatchery whereas in past years it more like 10% hatchery and the rest wild.  I do fish the upper religiously as I cant stand all the statues down in the lower.
