Rice Lake....May 1rst..
« on: May 01, 2006, 02:29:09 PM »

As noted in a previous post i took some out of town guests fishing today... Being that they just stocked rice lake i figured that we should give it a try for almost "guaranteed" action.....

We seperated and went around the lake......I fished the dock mainly and used every technique possible....almost every bait.... and even a few flys....my result was...

skunked....  >:(
Rod are you sure they put the fish in the lake or did they do something else with them....

That's why it's called fishing, not catching. ;D

Phone the hatchery to confirm if you wish, I'm just asked to put up updated info whenever they come in. :)

Ok...checked the gofishbc.com website http://www.gofishbc.com/SiteCM/U/D/90725B0B6EF34E0F.pdf

and I don't find Rice lake in the list of stocked lakes so far this year...

Here might lie the answer of our questions  :(

I'll look into that. Looks like that protest at the hatchery might become a reality after all. ;D

The updates I receive are directly from the hatchery manager, while the updated file in the above link is compiled by the information officer of the society.

Here you go, fast reply:

Quote
Last week we stocked

Tuesday, April 25th  -     Buntzen     - 2100 catchables @ 240 grams
                                    Como        -   900 catchables @ 240 grams
                                    Lafarge        - 900 catchables @ 240 grams

Wednesday, April 26th -    Alouette        -  2100 catchables @ 240 grams
                                            Rice        -  1000 catchables @ 240 grams
                                       Sasamat      -   1000 catchables @ 240 grams

Alice Lake will not be stocked any further. It was sampled last fall and regional staff found a large number of naturally produced fish in the lake. Policy is generally not to stock on top of a naturally occuring population. In addition, there was some serious water quality concerns raised with Alice Lake. Bottom line it will not be stocked this year. Each of Stump, Brohom, Browning (Murrin) and Edith have been stocked with catchables (April 12th).

the last time I fished there as about 4 or 5 years ago.. back then we tried everything to catch these lil guys.. the only thing that ever seemed to work was fairly good size chunks of cured salmon roe!!!  I used to wonder myself if there was any fish in there... but once I started using roe I would catch them in bunches

Saturday morning I took a friend from work to Rice, we got there around 10am and before I could even get my line in the water my friend caught one.  He was using a fly rod, and caught it on a wooly bugger first cast off the dock, around 10 min later I caught one on worms, and a person beside me got one on a spinner. Then the rain started coming down heavy and the fishing died right off, still not alot of surface action on the lake so Im thinking the water may still be a little cold. On a side not someone there mentioned that a guy at the gatehouse had told him that biologists were concerned about the frogs killing the fish in the lake because of some sort of parasite? maybe someone else knows something about this.

It's good to see that I'm not the only one getting skunked. These fish swimming on their side. Did they come out of the tube too fast? I saw a couple myself. Really the only sign that I could find that the lake was indeed stocked. Any idea if this is common after stocking? anybody? Rodney? Buehler?
