smelt fishing garry point June 2nd
« on: June 03, 2006, 11:47:11 AM »

Sorry about the late report. Covinced my dad to take me down to Garry Pont last night for some smelt fishing. I also brought my bamboo pole. Set the net out and within 10 minutes I see the net moving. I check it to find 2 chub stuck in it. :-\ Tried to remove them as carefully as possible but there gills ripped out. Set up my pole and went to the edge of the bay on the rocks and fished for about 5 minutes and I caught a sculpin. I put it in a bucket for a few minutes for some kids to look at then I released it. After another 5 minutes I caught another sculpin but smaller. Quickly released. I was tired of fishing so i packed up my pole and decided to focus on the net. Pulled it in to find 2 small pikeminnows. One of them popped out and it was on its way. The other one had its head ripped of when i tried to remove it. I went back to the beach and waited for half an hour then pulled the net in for good. it only contained 2 small chub. WHERE ARE THE SMELT ???

I checked Acadia Beach last tuesday but no smelt yet, either.  Seals and cormorant around me were not catching any smelt, either.

Ah, that was why nobody was fishing there when I checked to SEE it.

By the way is the fishing smelt with hook and line included in this regulation?

The regulations pertains to sportfishing. I would think fishing by hook and line will be included. I've never seen people use hook and line for smelts.

i dont think they would actually bite a hook as they have very small mouths... not to mention what would you use as bait... ???
