Kitimat area Report
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:53:46 AM »

Just spent two weeks in the kitimat terrace area . As i drove from my place in poco 14 hrs to the north coast I anticipated and pondered the endless opportunities of fishing the north coast area. As I made my way north my excitement was hampered by all the rivers being blown the entire way it was rivers and creeks filled with chocolate milk.  The creeks were raging and some were almost flooding there banks not a very positive out look as i made my way to terrace . The skeena was as dirty as the Fraser and huge as i have ever seen it as was the bulkley and kalum this was very disappointing to see. After driving 14 hrs i was at my hotel 5 min west of terrace and needed sleep . The next morning I was heading out to kitimat to work a Shutdown at the Eurocan pulp mill as i made my way to the job site i noticed the only river in the province still fishable was the kitimat not colored up and really not that high . So the fishing trip / work trip was still on the first shift was a 4 hour safety indocrination  then the rest of the day off . So it was of to the tackle store for advise and some spin n glos . I just traded my truck in on a jeep rubicon so i decided to test out the 4 x4 capabilities and started up some side roads which headed towards the kitimat river . We headed into our first spot through some nice mud holes and were at the river there were three channels one main one shallow and one side the shallows were right in front of us so we got out to asses the situation as we looked around i noticed a flash in the shallows and seen a 15 lb steely , was i ever shocked and excited . So i started to rig up my rod with float and pink worm the fish was resting in 18 in of water just holding there any way im rigged and the fish continues to hold as i cast up river of the fish i discover my reel is not working correctly and my presentation lands directly on top of the fish and spooks him outta there like a bullet . We hiked up river hoping to find him holding instead we walked into three more holding off to the side in 24 in of water all between 10 to 20 lbs so i try casting a few times but my reel for some reason wont free spool and it only goes 10 feet max and again spooks them all off. My buddie was hucking flys he had no success either that was day one. Day two we tried some spot closer to the ocean Bar fishing as my 6500 c3 was screwed up . No luck for the entire trip for me but did manage to find a spot on the last couple of days were some locals were doing very well in a three hour span between 5 rods 5 hooked 3 landed one was 50 lbs chinook one 28 lbs chinook one 12 chinook the same guys were there that morning and they hooked two more Chinook and one steely all on the bar rig set up better luck next year a bit of a learning curve this year but knowing what i know now will ensure better successes next year.

I seen other locals use this method but bar fishing is more relaxing and was productive as well.
