Pt Grey & W Van - Saturday July 15th
« on: July 17, 2006, 09:06:39 AM »

Fishing had been slow on my past two trips. Was in the Charlottes 3 weeks ago (2 20lb springs) and Pt Alberni the previous weekend for some sockeye (2 ~5lbs). Port Alberni inlet turns into quite a side show when the sockeye are staging ... so much for boater courtesy (what a zoo).

Anyway... headed out to Pt Grey for the tide change on Saturday morning. I took a buddy out who's never caught a salmon. We had one on shortly after dropping the gear got it to the boat and the line broke at the knot as my buddy was going for it with the net  :-\ ... shouldn't rush those knots!!! It looked like a ~15lb chinook.

About 15 minutes later we had another on and my buddy (keep in mind he's never played a salmon before) grabed the rod and... waited. I told him to set and reel but by that time it was gone. Same deal with the next. And that was it! No more action for the rest of the day.

We were using anchovies and running the gear between 25 to 65 feet. All the action happend at the high slack tide.

Cheers,
Justin.
