I have never been crabbing before. A couple questions for all of you...
1) Do you need a licence?
2) Where can I get a crab trap and what do they cost?
3) What do you bait it with?
4) Is there a limit or size restriction?
5) where do I find info on crabbing and the regs?
Thanks!!!
1. Yes - the normal tidal sport fishing license covers shellfish, including crabs.
2. Any tackle store (Berry's, Steveston Marine, Three Vets, Army & Navy, Hub Sports etc.) - $20 to the sky's the limit.
3. Anything stinky - fish parts, chicken bones, etc.
4. Yes. Min. 165 mm carapace width for dungeness crabs, and it's common practice (though not strictly required) to release all female crabs. You can get a "crab caliper" for measuring them at tackle stores. See #5 for details.
5. For licensing, gear, area & catch limits see
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/default_e.htm or the tidal waters fishing regs booklet they give you when you get your license.
Good luck & have fun!
