 Went out today , was rather slow. hooked our first two fish by 8;00 am. never got another bite until noon. double header to end the day. 3 other guys fishing the bar with us. One guy hooks up with my dad, I go to untangle them and I notice that he has a barbed hook. I said to him, I thought this was a barbless hook river. He said it is, then I asked why in the #&*$ are you using a barbed hook. His response was" Umm, oh i guess I forgot to pinch the barb off that hook". Boy i wish i had scissors , would have cut his hook off right there. Anyhow, fishing should pick up tomorrow i hope.

That's splitting hairs. All that flossing. The only thing that seperates that from being legal is black letters in a piece of paper.

barbed hooks? WHO CARES when we're flossing hundreds of thousands outta the rivers at this time of year.

I'll never fish with barbed hooks again...even if they repeal the regulation back to barbed hooks.

I was out in the Spaghetti area today. We got our sockeyes but we had to put in our time to get them, after losing a few at the boat. I haven't fished sockeye much this year, so it seemed like ok fishing, but some regulars near us were sayingthe fishing has been much better most other days recently. Maybe the recent commercial opening slowed it down a bit. No springs for us, though we saw a couple caught near us. It wa s a good day.
This was only my second time out for sockeye. I noticed there seemed to be less boats out than the time I was out earlier in the season. Maybe the crowds are thinnning a bit.

The fact that the guy confirmed that he knew it was a barbless river tends to make you feel that he probably was in a hurry to rig or re-rig, and just forgot to pinch the barb.  It happens.  I know guys that ALWAYS pinch their barbs, but then someone gets talking to them or a big fish gets landed near by and they forget.  Usually they (or someone else) will notice and they'll immediately pinch it.

I don't want to re-split hairs but...The only thing that seperates ANYTHING from being legal is black letters in a piece of paper.

Ive made the same mistake so it is possible that it was an honest mistake.

I either use factory barbless hooks, or I crimp all the hooks before I prepare my rigs or tie any flies.  That way, I don't risk breaking the hook while attempting to de-barb it after the fly has been tied!

I tie my own flys and pinch all my bait gear ones but i've been given fly's and found them with the barbs still up and had to pinch them after I noticied..It can happen.
