Fishing Forbidden Plateau
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:25:58 PM »

Went up to the lovely Forbidden Plateau again last week for a three days, this time with a fishing rod instead of skis. Some of the nicest alpine lakes on the Island and very few fishers (saw one) as well as campers for some reason. Some day hikers, but not like hordes. No freaking fishing line and garbage strewn everywhere like what we see on the Fraser right now, which was nice. Fishing was a challenge in some of the lakes due to so many bugs for the fish to eat, and my lousy fly casting and matching the hatch. At others small lures could call in the hungry trout in the clear mountain water. Gorgeous shoals at some lakes like Kwai Lake made me wish I had brought the inflatable to try trolling a fly through there. We hiked a loop from where we camped at Helen McKenzie to Battleship and Croteau, up to Kwai and then to Hairtrigger and back past the vacant ranger station and down to Helen McKenzie at last. Helen had the best fishing on this trip and look forward to bringing the boat up (and less beer) for a better shot at those pesky trout at some of the others next time. Caught the biggest fish at about pound and a half, which was bigger than I would have expected. You had to wait for the bite to come on in the middle of the day with the bugs coming up off the bottom of the lake in the warm sun. We swam there as well and it was cool as in chilly but nice. Day hikers would dive in and out scarring the fish. Early morning fishing was spotty so you could theoretically sleep in. I think we forgot to pay at the trail entrance, so I owe them next time...if I remember 8)

Wow, thanks for the nice report & some awesome scenery. Fish or no fish, the scenery is worth the trip.
