Campbell River Aug.19-26th, A Series of Reports
« on: August 27, 2006, 10:29:30 AM »

Day 1:
Day 1 was a bit of a right-off too head out to Campbell River as we were staying in Saratoga, about 20mins. south of C.R., so, I hit the beach front in search of some pinks on the fly. A lot of risers, but nothing. Anyways, we stayed at a place called Taylor's Sandy Beach Resort. Right on the beach, and an incredible view of everything. It had a lot of neat things such as basketball hoops, teatherball poles, ping pong, and firepits on the beach ;D. The beach was really nice, pure sand, and perfect for making sand castles. We ended up making 2 huge sandcastles (well fortresses really ::) ;D) ), out of the nice fine sand. I loved this spot as there was practically everything within a perfect distance. Mini-golf, go-karts, fishing right infront of the place, C.R. 20 mins away and a bunch of other cool things.

Not really fishing related, but its a pic of our second, and better built fortress withstanding that mighty incoming tide ;D ::)

Day 2:
Started out day 2 with a little trip to C.R. for a bit. My mom dropped me off at the river then went for a run, then got herself and coffee and me a hot chocolate. By the time she came back, I had already landed about 7 pinks, and had one on when she came. I ended up hooking and landing many more in just a few hours of fishing.

Picture of spot #1

After about 3 hours of fishing, we headed back to our place in Saratoga and headed down to the beach. I went and fished spoons and flies to no avail. Later that night, I did the same thing, but once again, to no avail.

Day 3:

I headed out to Campbell River with my mom's boyfriend. We also went to pick his nephew up, who lives in Campbell River...lucky! And again we went to fish for some more pinks in the river and guess what....I got some more! And so did Kyle, his nephew. But My mom's boyfriend didnt...ahaha.
We probably got about 20 each, except him (I ended up keeping one for the barby. see pic below ;) ) . Same thing happened after fishing, beach and stuff, and once again that night, i got skunked out on the beach. Its still fun watching all of those pinks flop out of the water.

Pink I kept

Day 4:

Almost the same as Day 2. Mom dropped me off, went for a run, picked up breakfast for the 2 of us, a hot chocoalte for me, and a coffee for herself. Once again, more and more fish ::) ;D. After the slaying of the fish, we headed to mini-golf and go-karts. Later on, we headed to the beach for some fun in the sun.

I was thinking about fishing on the beach again, but since this place had four rowboats, two 12' aluminum boats, and many kayaks and various water toys, I thought of going out in one of the larger row boats. Hey $15 to rent anything except the alumininum with the motor on it, for the entire week was pretty good. So, headed out with my mom's boyfriend. He rowed, I fished. Casted spoons half the time, only to catch a couple large bullheads. Then the rest of the time, I casted floating line with a clear rio sink tip, and a pink eve fly. Didnt get much, except while reeling up the line to head in, a pink decided to hit it less than 10ft from the boat! It exploded out of the water and almost into the boat! Of course I lost it cause thats just the way it goes :P ::).

Anywho here are some pics of beaching the boat.

Will post Day 5-9 later on today ;)

Nice report, Cody! I haven't been to Campbell River in a few years but I always stayed at Taylor's Sandy Beach Resort as well. Saratoga  Beach is a great place for the family.

Well, well. On Wed. 23rd 10am I was fishing off the very same rock you were standing on as seen in your Day 2 photo. Only fished for an hour... nothing showing. Didn't see anything in the river, didn't see anyone catch. Cast a line off Discovery Pier, and pulled up a lingcod. The E.F. Provincial campground is great value for a short stay in the rough.... and right across the road from "that rock". Next time, I'd like to do the snorkelling float down the river. Always lots to do at Campbell River.

Ok now for days 5-9 ;)

Day 5:

Went out again with my mom. Same routine as always. Caught lots more fish. Fish, after fish, after fish. Also got a couple on the fly rod this day too ;). Just as I released another fish, we had to cut the day short. Suddenly, my mom yells "Holy crap Cody theres a bear right across from you!" I look up and, oh snap! it slowly wanders down the river bank, and then it stops right across from me. We didnt really think much until it started going into the water. A fellow beside me started making some noices to spook the bear away and he did just that. The bear turned around and kept casually walking down the river.

Heres some pics of the bear. (had to be a fair distance away so pics arent that great).

another action shot

Day 6:

Day 7:
Fished in the morning with Kyle and my mom's boyfriend. He forgot his license at home so he didnt fish ::). He didint even touch a fish the whole trip. Oh well, theres always next year.
