Legend they lose 15-25% of their weight by the time they spawn in the river but there is not many fish over 50lbs. We handled hundreds and i mean hundreds of fish by hand and non were over an honest 40-45 lbs.  Please dont take offence im not argueing but i dont think that fish is 50+ its a beaut maybe just the cam angle though. Great elk pics though i cant believe they didnt take off. I have only seen elk maybe 10-15 times but they always take off when they see me and dont look back.

roe kid the lake is both salt and freshwater. The lake connects almost directly to the ocean and the river flows into it. The tide flows in and out of the lake through tht narrow gap. hmmm someone else can explain this better than i can.

The lake is almost like an inlet, with a very narrow entrance, close to the sea to be affected by it, but influenced by the river flowing into it. Not technically a lake, but also not technically part of the ocean.

Make sense ?

I think calling it a lake is a bit of a misnomer...I am stillnot clear on the whether the "lake" is fresh or salt....I don't mean tidal/nontidal or like the fraser where there the angling regs change from tidal to non tidal...I am curious to know what the "lake's" salinity is...if you took a swig...is it fresh or salt water?

As well, I assume that there must be a lake at the head of the nitnat that feeds it...is this correct?  What lake is it.  I was looking on mapquest and the rivers and lakes on the site are not really included...just trying to learn more about nitnat's geography.

The lake is feed by the Nitnat river , Nitnat lake is roughly 20 km long the water is Salt in the lake the East end is where the fresh water flows in from the river the west end ties into the ocean this is where the "gap " is. In the lake near the gap the crabbing is also world class there were many traps set up out there . At the west end of the lake near the gap the depths are very shallow as you head east the water drops to 250 plus depths . While we were successful trolling away from the shallows working just on the east of the drop off the power moochers were mooching on the shallow shelf . We actually had a double header on the tide change as we were trolling the sounder showed two fishnear our depths and bam my rod pops so Troy gets up to bring all the other gear in when our second rod is also smashed we lucked out and landed both with a broken net handle  ;D
