Mini Derby Day
« on: October 14, 2006, 05:59:34 PM »

Thickrick drove yours truly and his buddy, Hunter to the designated spot early in the morning.  We met up with everyone and headed off to our individual locations.  We got to our spot and started working our way down stream.  Stopped to fish some really nice froggy water, the kind coho like to hang out in but no dice.  But then again the target today were big Chinook, right?  Made it to our spot.  TR had one on pretty quickly.  He landed it and we measured it at 32 inches or so.  The standard is now set.  We fished this spot for and eventually I landed my 37" chinook on some roe.  That got TR going.  He really wanted to land something bigger than mine.   ;D  There were a fair number of chum hooked, many landed and more than a few spring hooked that got off.  Saw several dark coho's porpoising as well but none hooked.

Here's a few pics:

I think this was Rick's first fish of the day:

Followed by his second:

Mine:

An action shot of Rick fighting a chum.  (He insisted!  ::))

This was Hunter's first time out drift fishing and he had a blast learning how to get fish to bite his presentation!  I think he's addicted now after he hooked a few!   ;)

Yeah it was a very fun outing, Myseld lil fisherman, testo, nuggy, and bigsteel  all fished the same area, Nuggy got one on right away, measured 31.5 inches. At arrival many chrome springs were jumping, a few well over 40lbs. The action slowed down, Hooked lots of springs but had a hard time landing them, Was the same story with bigsteel. At around 11:30, (30 mins before the end of derby), Me and bigsteel witnessed two chrome 50plus pound chinook jump, Then seceonds later both floats rocket under water and we are into a double header, However after a long battle both fish were lost :-[ :-[ We then called it quits and went to meet the other fellows. Deadhead took first place with a 38incher, then merc wrapped up 2nd with a 37incher, and thick rick came 3rd with a 32. We then proceeded to the habitat fundraiser, were we had an awsome salmon lunch and ran into Fisherforever, rodney, and Chris G. lots of great prizes and gift baskets were won, unfortunatley not by us ;D On the way home stopped by the canal just to look, We saw 2 beatiful skeins of chum roe sitting on the beach!!!  I asked the angler beside them if he was having it, and he said no! Bigsteel hears this and makes a mad dash down the hill sprinting as fast as he can, However he took the long way and I jumped down the 10 foot dirt hill, making it to the prize roe first ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D But seeing the sad look of defeat on his face encouraged me to give it to him ;D,

Great day on the water!!, had lots of fun!

Ya well eventhough TRK didn't land any big springs...he had some monsters on! The last double header were by far the biggest fish on throughout the day. Good Day! Thanks for the pictures Testo!

Why does that pool rick is fighting a fish on look so familiar?
I can't place it, maybe it's from a different angle than I am used to seeing it?
Can someone please relieve the itch this vague memory is causing????
Thx,
rib

I would again like to say thanks to everyone for coming out for a great day!!  Also a Big thanks to Rob at Gone Fishin for supplying that real nice Rod and the Camoe Hat.  Just a side note, the Rod was so nice that it was taken over the money for first place.
Was great seeing Chris and Rod at the fundraisor and special thanks to Rodney for giving up his secret Coho spot!! ;D ;D
