Finally got a chance to get out to the real westcoast today. Wasnt long after we got off the main logging road that we saw our first bear. Didnt bother with pics as i knew there would be plenty more. Stopped for a strech and to check out some fish. Up pulls spudcote another member we say hi and we leave to go fishin. On the way to the spot the trail crossed a small ditch/creek and to my suprise theres a good 100 chum in it. Only 2 inches deep and 3 feet across but a good sign there was plenty of fish in the main flow.
Sure enough we get to the river and theres chums showing themselves everywhere. Not long till we hook into a some and after we dialed in on a purple egg sucking leech it was non stop fish.
As you can see if you look closely these fish were very aggresive and inhaled our flies makin pliers a must. Another little blacky stopped by and picked up an old spring and took it up into the forest.
Kept fishing and managed to hook a clean(for chum)still showing some chrome and no to ugly.
We were just C&R so back he went. Above us an eagle stopped by for a snack so i walked up to him and he posed for me.
Got back to fishing and hooked up with another chum. While trying to unhook him he takes off and pop there goes my rod
I was more than asking for this with my 6wt but had another top end for that rod so no problem. If you look at this pic you can see the top part of my rod broken in my hand.
So lesson learned 2 peice 6wt + chum= 3 peice 6 wt
Switched to gear and hooked a few on the drift rod until the chum burnt out the drag on my abu
My gear was sure not holding up! Luckily i brought 3 rods to the river! haha finally switch to my spinning rod and hook up with more chum and lose one coho around 6 -8lbs. Moved up river And switched to a back up flyrod i had in the car. Didnt fish much in this spot but the chum were stacked
Walked around the corner and found a large blacky but didnt have the cam so i went back and grabbed it. By the time i returned he had moved on but another 500 feet upriver i found another smaller bear. He was on the far side of the river and i crouched taking some pics as he did not even see me. Then he began to cross as i continued to take pictures.
Before i knew it and looked up from the camera he was to close for comfort. Only 40-50 feet away i made sure he saw me and he took off.
All in all a great day even if i only got chum they were lots of fun and i hope to be back soon.
