i procure prawn tails with the following method
first off i place raw product into pre boiled water (still boiling of course) and boil for 30 seconds, no more no less.
- mix 1 tablespoon of desired cure powder with 6 tablespoons coarse (pickling) salt and 2 cups of cold water ( i use distilled water but not sure if it matters).
- place approx 1/2 lbs of shrimp/prawns into the mixture and place in fridge for 4 to 8 hours depending on how much you want the dye to penetrate.
- drain the finished product and rinse in cold water to remove left over dye
- store in pickling salt in the fridge ( 10 days max) or the freezer
Steelhead simply love these baits, and i'm sure the coho on your favorite river will enjoy them too.
Try red hot prawn tails next time you are out for springs..... simply deadly

will natural prawn tails work ? uncured fresh prawn tails . if you let the prawns age it will produce a smell ,will that scent attract fish ?

Yes that will, 3 years ago that is what I would fo when I fish at sasamat lake. I caught many trout like that!

Do you guys fish whole tails or pieces attached to the hook or do you do something else.

If you are fishing the whole tail, how are you threading it on?

when i rig prawn tails, i buy the black tiger prawns with the shell on. They average in size from 2 inches long to 3 inches long. For springs i would use the cure above, steelhead is a totally different thing, I generally fish the tails cooked but not cured. I always keep them in a handful of coarse salt. The trick is getting them to stay on the hook. I use the spawnee net mesh squares, the jumbo sized ones in hot pink or peach and wrap the tail in the stretched out position, tying it off just above the tail fans with spider thread. I use a 1/0 barbless gami and once through the head and out, then stick it through just above were the spider thread is wrapped. Stays on better than any way I've seen them rigged. For natural colour or for wrapping procured died shrimp or prawns, use the peach or white jumbo squares, lets the color of the bait come through when it gets wet.
