Jigs can be very effective.  I have short floated jigs tipped with shrimp on the vedder with much success.  Other than the fly, I primarily use this method for steelhead short of the border.  Already picked up 18 steelhead this year on the Snake and Columbia using jigs.

I have caught lots of fish on jigs. I have caught salmon, steelhead, bull trout and cutties as an accidental catch when targetting steelies. I like them and they can be fished in various different ways. They can be short floated, they can be used just casting and retrieving, they can also be used by jigging hence the name "Jigs"

I make them.  Either use a bucktail pattern or maribou.  I also use Trout Beads on the Jigs.  They're very easy to make, don't really save me much money, but it's kind of therapeutic to make them.

I caught a real nice chum on the stave this year with a half ounce purple jig with sparse flash.  I tied it straight to my main line and did a jigging motion while retrieving.  The chum hammered it as it was hooked on the top inside of the tip of it's mouth.

Pinks hammer then as well.  Fun the cast into the clear water when a school goes by and watch a couple of them go for it.  They can't resist the twisty tail.
