atlantic salmon alert
« on: November 19, 2006, 07:15:56 PM »

I have been involved with the Stoney Creek Enviromental Committee for several years and we have been making headway in establishing a healthy fish population in this tributary of the Brunette River in Burnaby.  In 2004 we had salmon coming up various tributaries on Burnaby Mountain and this year the fish have not returned as high up these tributaries, despite the high water of recent weeks and despite the fact that I cleared debris blockages to enable the fish to get through.  Some members have noticed some unfamiliar fish and it has been suggested that they may be atlantic salmon.  I have not seen them myself or managed to get a photograph and today the fish moved from where they were last seen.

This stream is in an urban setting and it is always a challenge to protect the spawning chums and coho from being harassed by certain members of the public.  If anyone notices any unusual fish, we would appreciate being notified of when and where you saw them (contact information can be found on the website at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/stoney/).  Also, if you would like to get involved in helping to patrol these small waterways, you would certainly be welcome.
