Boat Launches in the port moody area?
« on: December 11, 2006, 08:59:14 PM »

Could anyone in the port moody area please help me understand where foreshore park is? I have been on google maps and  can find shoreline park but not foreshore park. The reason I am asking is because I was told there was a boat launch there? This is a different one than the one at Rocky Point I hope? Any info on this or any other boat launches in the moody area would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou in advance.

I think Foreshore Park is in S Burnaby on the N arm of the Fraser River. I don`t think it has a boat launch. I could be wrong though.

Cheers

Here is the context I assumed there was a boat launch at this Forshore park port moody.

Explore Port Moody's well-known Foreshore Park, a scenic four-kilometre shoreline trail offering great bird watching, beaches, a boat launching ramp, and the pier at Rocky Point Park. A scenic, paved pathway wraps itself around the east end of Burrard Inlet and runs for several miles to Old Orchard Park. Paralleling it is a pedestrian-only walkway through the park. Rocky Point Park's lengthy pier runs out into the shallow waters of Burrard Inlet's eastern end.

Just so you know there is a serious lack of boat launching spots around the lower mainland. That's why i use a canoe and kayak. The parks is attached to Rocky point by trail and takes you past some of Canada's most poluted water (don't I say don't eat the crabs.)

Do you think the area around cates park is considerably less polluted? I know there is a shortage of boat launches. Are there any around Bellwood Bay. Bellcara park?  Anything on that side of the inlet?

The Victoria area has lots of public boat launches, but when you come to the lower mainland most of the sites are commercial operations, and to too small a degree public boat launches, in my freeking opinion. There use to more places to launch but they get barricaded up because tax money is not used on boat launches that get negelected to the point that garbage piles up etc. In Victoria there still right proud to fund fishing with boats, or mearly taking the old pram out for a row old boy.
The Burrard inlet has cleared up to some degree as far as pollution . I used to catch some nasty looking cancerous lesion scarred fish from there though. :-X
Tsswassen is a rough boat launch that tends to get shut down more and more. Tides really affect that one.No more camping there as well :'(

Troutbreath thankyou for your input. You have touched a cord here with me and I have too elaborate. I love Victoria. It in my opinion is a outdoorsmans place to live. That would probably be my first choice. My favorite pastime from January to May is crab fishing. My favorite boat launch is Cate's park. You cant beat the about 8-10 lanes of launch there. No waiting around very little pressure. In and out any tide. We presently live in Vancouver and are starting too burst at the seams in this house. I live around family here. My wife works in co quitlam and wants to move there. She refuses to cross a bridge to get to work and I don't blame her.We have both agreed we like the Ioco/ belcarra area for the outdoor like feel to it. Seems more outdoorsy. Also there are a lot of newer areas and subdivision there. But if we do move I would love to be closer to a boat launch where I can crab. I guess that brings me to the rocky point side rather than the ioco belcarra side. Unfortunately the area behind rocky point seems too be a lot older. I have only been to the rocky point boat launch a few times and don't remember much about it. This is where my delima lies. I know Ioca/Belcarra has the two lakes buntzen and Sasamat that are not hard core lakes but could be entertaining to try and fish. I am now torn but think I am drawn to the ioca side. It probably wouldn't be that bad of a drive to Rocky point. I know coquitlam has the coquitlam river I dont know much about either. For the shorter window of opportunity fishing wise that isnt much of a draw. Anybodies thoughts?

I've lived in this neighbourhood for 12 years and love the mix of outdoorsy opportunities and proximity to the town centre. I believe Rocky Point boat launch is the only sea-access ramp for trailer boats in the area. Lots of other access points if you have a portable boat like a kayak - you can get in from Belcarra, from Old Orchard Park, from the park off Barnet Hwy just before it reaches Burnaby. There's also a marina - Reed Point.

Lots of freshwater opportunities too. The two lakes you mentioned are underestimated for the trout (hatchery) fishing they offer in the warmer months. At Buntzen (small boat launch), the lake is large enough to loose yourself to peace and 14+" feisty rainbows. If you are a strong hiker, there are several isolated lakes in the upper levels of Eagle Mountain and Burke Mountain. I leave the Coq. River for viewing and hiking only.

The Fraser is 15min. drive, and there is a boat launch - 2 min. from the Home Depot and a Casino!!

The Pitt River is 10min. away - I havn't got to fish there yet. Even Sturgeon Slough in Pitt Polder offers bass and carp for those who choose to.

These are just what I would consider our "local" spots. A 45min. drive takes you to the Stave/Rolley/Alloutte region. And 60min. to Harrison/Vedder.

And did I mention two great tackle shops in the area.

Good luck in your assessment and decisioning.
