Job Ops: Ecological Baseline Inventory Data Collection TeamSat Jan 13, 2007 6:43AM24.81.90.123

The Nature Trust of British Columbia
Ecological Baseline Inventory Data Collection Team (2007)

Background
The Nature Trust is dedicated to conserving British Columbia’s biological diversity and natural beauty for future generations through selective securement and effective management of areas of ecological significance. However, the information required to secure and manage land effectively for conservation of BC’s biodiversity has yet to be collected for many of the 420 properties owned by The Nature Trust. A baseline ecological inventory on TNT’s holdings throughout British Columbia will contribute to a better understanding of the features already under permanent conservation protection as well as provide guidance for effective management and future land acquisitions for biodiversity conservation purposes. This new joint initiative of the Ministry of Environment and The Nature Trust will address this deficiency in a strategic manner and provide a unique mentoring/career development component to the BC Conservation Corps program.

Project Objectives
• Data collection of baseline ecological characteristics on 25-30 conservation properties in three regions; Vancouver Island, Okanagan, and Kootenay. Data will be collected for vegetation on specified plots, locations of habitat features such as wildlife trees, burrows, nests, geological landforms and permanent natural features, and human disturbances such as trails, roads, and buildings. In years two and three, additional properties in these and other regions in BC will be surveyed.
• Provide rigorous training and field experience for four candidates specifically recruited under the BC Ministry of Environment Conservation Corps program with supervision from The Nature Trust’s Ecosystem Specialist and Regional Land Managers. Crew members will be encouraged to apply for potential employment opportunities with the BC Ministry of Environment, Canadian Wildlife Service, or Fisheries and Oceans Canada after the season is completed.

Skills and Qualifications
Applicants will preferably have completed or are in the process of completing a university level degree program in natural resource management, ecology, zoology, or botany. Applicants with experience or university level training in ecological inventory techniques, data entry, and use of hand held GPS units are preferred. Ideally, they will have been on a past BC Conservation Corps or other conservation-type field crew team and certified in Industrial First Aid with transport endorsement. Team work, basic first aid, and understanding of safe field operations will be essential. The Nature Trust will provide a field orientation training program that allows for familiarization with the inventory techniques for this project. Applicants demonstrating self reliance, self motivation, confidence, enthusiasm, and interest in pursuing a career in wildlife, fish or habitat management are preferred.

Employment Details
The work will be completed over a 5 month period, beginning approximately in mid-April 2007. There will be considerable travel over the work period with the base located in the Lower Mainland (the Nature Trust office is located in North Vancouver). A per diem for accommodation and meals will be provided while traveling to the three regions. Some camping may be required.
