A rare sighting today

I wouldn't have believe it if I didn't see it. I actually saw a Conservation Officer this afternoon ! First time in about 5 years.  ;) A stray whale in the Fraser and a CO all in one day. Who would have thunk it ?

five years is the average. last time I saw one was about 3 years ago and he said that 5 years is usually the average because of the low numbers in the field and the amount of rivers they have to cover.

It's called flashback. You know, when you think you saw something. Probably wasn't a CO but a guy in uniform doing something totally differant like sucken out septic fields or something.

Last year there was a whale beached in Delta.  So 2 years in a row compared to 5 years in between CO sighting. Hmm, guess lost whales is more abundant than our COs eh?   ;D ;D :D

"CO, the forgotten endangered species", sounds like a good topic for an upcoming article... ;)

I've actually encountered COs and DFO officers numerous times, not sure why. :-\ Two years ago in late March, Fishersak and I were fishing on the Cheakamus. It was a remote spot that requires around 10 minutes of walking from the nearest parking spot. There had been no one around all day and suddenly a CO popped out from the woods. Surprising, but good, as a CO can always provide you an update on the latest fishing results. After a short briefing and checking, he was off again.

A couple of weeks later, after April 1st, while Itosh, Chrome Mykiss, John Bigbooty and I were getting ready to walk down to the Squamish River. A CO truck drove by, stopped, backed up to our spot. The same CO walked out and wanted to check licences of course. I said, "Hey you just checked me not long ago." He said, "Yeah but that was before Licence renewal on April 1st." ;D

COs are dedicated and they do their best to protect our resource, the problem has always been the insufficient amount of fund that doesn't allow them to do more. The best all of us can do is to phone in all the violations that we observe, and be as detailed as possible.

So, has anyone taken a photo of the whale, or the CO?

Inaugurated in 2003, the Ceremonial Unit was created to render honours, preserve tradition, inspire esprit-de-corps and enhance the agency’s recognition within government, the law enforcement community and the general public. Comprised of twenty Conservation Officers from all ranks, members of the unit are strictly volunteers. Officers commit to a minimum of two years with the Ceremonial Unit and it is their civic-minded spirit and consistent hard work that ensures its ongoing value.

Members of the unit wear a distinctive dress uniform which consists of: a dark blue tunic; a black “Sam Browne” leather belt and cross strap or ceremonial belt; white lanyard; unique shoulder titles; white dress shirt; dark blue slacks; black parade boots; black leather and/or white cotton gloves; and a traditional, dark blue Stetson hat.

As ambassadors for the Conservation Officer Service, the Ceremonial Unit represents the agency on those occasions requiring a special, formalized presence, including:

Remembrance Day Services;
Police and Peace Officer Memorial Services;
Funeral services for past members of the Conservation Officer Service; and
various civic ceremonies and special events.
