What happen to this year's steelhead run?
« on: February 07, 2007, 06:27:12 PM »

This year's run seems dismal compared to last year's. Last year, Chris' journals often reported multiple hookups by him or others around him in most runs he fished in the morning. We saw the same ourselves. This year, we often see nothing for an entire stretch of river, not to say multiple hookups. What really happened to the run?  Did the hatchery cut the stocking of steelhead smolts like they did for coho, or are there nets at the river mouth?  ???

Where were you fishing last year to get the multiple hookups?

Those fish traps that exsited over the past couple of seasons are gone (above bergman and KWB), I'm not sure if you were focusing in these areas or not.

Cheers,
Nicole

The river is different with the claybanks adding color, that may be the difference. From all accounts the fish are there this year in good numbers on every river I have had feedback on.

Keep pounding and they will come!

Good luck and tight lines,

Pat

The fish are there its just been a little tougher with the inconsistent water conditions and all the changes to the river there is so much nice water to find out there ,cover as much river as you can you will be surprised what you will find.

I guess Liketofish is addressing the run from a statistical point of view and not from his personal experiences. Individuals may have different result, some may even do better than last year (like the 10-minute action post). But there is no doubt that some top rods in this forum show much less hookups than last year. :o    Perhaps the coloured water makes the lower river fishing a lot harder too. Nicole, I think you should scan through last year posts or Chris' journals in January to have a feel of those days of multiple hook ups. I have been there a few times in runs around or below Lickman. On one of those morning trips, I must have counted a dozen fish within view from where I fished and one of those was mine.  :D

Just to bring the exciting moments back, here is one hack of day of multiple hook ups by many good rods on Jan 18, 2006. I had 4 hook ups:   :D

How about this one from Chris, just one of many excellent reports from him:  :D

No doubt about it, the fish are there, just not as many. Go get them boys & girls. It may take a while & require some luck this year, but steelheading is about patience & perseverence. Tough it.  ;D
