Another Good Day Part 2
« on: February 16, 2007, 08:54:02 PM »

Feeling the effects of yesterday evening's workout I decided to fish a system closer to home rather than making the long drive. Arrived at first spot I wanted to try but was somewhat discouraged to find it occupied by 3 fishermen. I parked and started hiking downstream. After 15 minutes or so I met another fisherman leaving. After the usual pleasantries I inquired how was the fishing. He advised that he's been there for an hour without so much as a bite but he encouraged me to give it a try. Still somewhat sore from the vigorous workout I really didn't relish the idea of more hiking and decided to give the run a try. Upon arriving at the river's edge I noticed that the visibility was approx. 18". I rigged up a #1/0 DNE hook onto a 18" leader and started with a roe bag. Prior to making my first cast I took a temperature of the water. It was 40 degrees and the air temperature was 43 degrees. My first cast of the day resulted in a snag and my losing the terminal tackle. :( I rerigged again with another roe bag. After 10 minutes or so I changed over to a prawn. Several cast later my float acted strange on it's journey downstream. I set the hook and hook came back minus the bait. Was this a bite ? I once again rerig with another fresh prawn. Two cast later at almost the same spot the float went down as if it was being dragged down by a snag. I set the hook and was immediately greeted by the flash of a steelhead. It proceeded to jump several times and took a couple of runs  before being lead to the beach on it's side. It was a chrome 6-7 lb. hatchery female. Too early to quit so I released it. Continued to fish for another hour or so using rubber worms, jigs and spinner with no further luck. It was a good day. February has been good to me thus far; 3 steelheads in 3 trips. Good luck to everybody fishing this weekend.

Great job FA and great report too. I am just heading out and I hope I can be equal to the task as I have only one wild steely for the year after 3 trips. Wish me luck guys and gals. ;D
