St Mary Lake Saltspring April 28, 29.
« on: April 30, 2007, 10:22:46 PM »

Well we had a little "anniversary getaway" to Saltspring this weekend. Since we were staying on St Mary lake of course we had to try a bit of fishing.

I had heard that bass were very plentiful and easy to catch this time of year so I was pretty optimistic. I'm no bass fishing expert, but I have caught a few, and so we started off with tubes, crankbaits (flatfish) and bait. No bass. I caught a small cuttthroat. Then eventaully I hooked and lost a heavy sort of sluggish fish (maybe Bass??) that I never did see.

After losing patience with chasing bass we paddled the canoe around a bit and found a spot where trout were rising. We forgot about the bass and started fly fishing for them and had a lot of fun catching cutties in the 10-12" range. They were super aggressive and sometimes 8-10 trout would follow the fly to the boat. A little more exploring and the wife lands a nice fat 16" rainbow. A little later I hooked a bigger rainbow, but it was lost at the boat in a nettting mishap - she claims it was an accident and she still has the biggest fish! :D.

It certainly is a nice place to visit, and the fishing was pretty good - now if only I could figure out how to hook the bass...

The sluggish fish was probably a sucker there is quite a few on the bottom on those lakes. Sound like you had fun though, good job!

Nice one Gman. ;) We've been told about the good cutthroat trout fishing on St Mary's. :) The fish are aggressive indeed. Last year, we had numerous cutthroat trout chasing and grabbing onto our 3' plastic tubes for bass when being retrieved. :o The sluggish fish is most likely a bass. When they turn their broad body sideway in the deep, the weight gets heavier because of the water resistance.

I see the female anglers in your family are once again outfishing you. ;D Maybe you should keep them away from the pinks this September.

Cost. Ferry via Victoria or direct on gulf island ferries.

Gman probably stayed at Green Acres again? We usually stay at Lakeside Gardens, where you get a discount if you mention Fishing with Rod.

I read a scientific study years ago, under indentical conditions woman always do better than men, by around 15-25%.  It has to do with testosterone and all that jazz, the fish can smell it when we touch the hook.  food for thought.

But we report our fish to be 20-30% bigger so it makes up for it ;)
