« on: April 14, 2007, 04:04:52 PM »

So i took my little cousin out to Rice Lake today..... Was hopeing to get a few fish with him.... I noticed a few things... We counted literally 16 fish that were just floating belly up or were on the way to dieing... Some of these fish were struggling to breath and just floated there....

why .. .what happened... talked to pretty much everyone who was fishing and nobody got into any fish.... everyone was looking at the floting casualties and wondered what happenend... i was hopeing somoene would know on this site...

Well I would guess maybe some sort of stress that they over came.....not enough nutrients...maybe somthing went wrong when they stocked it or raised them...hard time getting used to the new environment....maybe someone poured some sort of poison into the lake? struggling to take in oxygen, genetic problems, something is plugging the gills? these are just a few assumptions...

The fish were stocked on April 11th. Mortality is not unusual in a batch of newly stocked fish. The possible causes have already been listed by Mike. The hatchery will get a note on this, if they think it is something more significant, then some prior testings maybe involved before the next stocking.

Rice Lake sites in the Lower Seymour Conservative Reserve, which is managed by the Greater Vancouver Regional District. If more sightings of dead fish occur, one should report it to them. If there is indeed a problem with the water, the regional district should know so the problems can be taken care of immediately to avoid it from spreading to other wildlife. You can phone the GVRD information centre at 604-432-6200.

Anyone have an update to this?  We were thinking of heading out to Rice soon before I stumbled onto this thread...

The staff who did the stocking on that day reported a good healthy stock of trout.

The staff at the Seymour Conservative Reserve have not reported any concerns since, so I'm assuming no more dead fish have been reported by users.

Give it a go.

Try Browning Lake in Squamish too. Last weekend when I drove by in the evening, the surface action seemed quite abundant. 900 trout were put in there on April 17th.
